Es sind letzte Vorbereitungen zu einem Ereignis, das die Welt verändern wird: Der erste Atombombentest. Was wie ein Stoff für eine Dokumentation oder ein dokumentarisches Filmdrama wirkt, war für den amerikanischen Komponisten John Adams die Vorlage für eine der bedeutendsten Opern des beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts. Doctor Atomic, uraufgeführt am 1. Oktober 2005 in San Francisco, erscheint nun in der Weltersteinspielung. Unter Leitung des Komponisten singen Gerald Finley, Julia Bullock, Brindley Sherratt, Samuel Sakker und andere. Robert Oppenheimer, Edward Teller, Robert R. Wilson: Die Schar der Hauptfiguren dieses Dramas, in dem sich die Ängste, Schuldgefühle, falschen und echten Hoffnungen angesichts der bevorstehenden Möglichkeiten der Superbombe verdichten, ist historisch. Das Libretto, verfasst von Peter Sellars, basiert auf authentischen Regierungsunterlagen, erweitert durch lyrische Texte verschiedener Jahrhunderte – von Gedichten von Charles Baudelaire bis zur Bhagavad Gita. John Adams, ohne Zweifel der bedeutendste US-amerikanische Komponist der Gegenwart, komponierte das Szenario, das mit wachsender Spannung vor dem entscheidenden Moment des Atomtestes endet, mit großem stilistischen Reichtum basierend auf dem Postminimalismus, den Adams seit Jahrzehnten weiterentwickelt.
