Info for Songs of Joy and Sorrow
Celebrated guitarist Xuefei Yang joins cellist Johannes Moser ‘one of the finest among the astonishing gallery of young virtuoso cellists’ (Gramophone) for Kings Place’s Master Series, in an intricate sequence of dance and song-based gems.
Natural instrumental partners, exchanging singing lines and delicate accompanying figures, they journey through Renaissance and Baroque works towards Schubert’s scintillating Arpeggione Sonata, originally written for a guitar-like fretted, six-string cello. Yang will showcase some of the finest Chinese works she has brought into the repertoire, while Moser adds haunting solo Bach. They come together for De Falla’s Popular Songs, by turns smouldering and soulful.
"This is a seriously virtuosic performance that takes ‘classical guitar’ in many exciting new directions" (Classical Guitar Magazine)
"…there’s no questioning Moser’s ambition, nor the sheer sense of verve with which he pulls it all off…" (The Strad)
