Info for Stanisław Moryto: Chamber Music

Stanisław Moryto is one of the most important and strongest personalities of Polish contemporary art. Not only was he an outstanding composer, organist, teacher, and animator of musical life, but also an erudite, visionary, and tireless promoter of Polish culture. Above all, he was an authentic person who did not succumb to transient trends. He passed away prematurely, on June 5, 2018, after a long and severe illness. On the fifth anniversary of his death, the musicians of the Prima Vista String Quartet and their guests recall this extraordinary figure by sharing his music, which, as he himself used to say, was most precious and intimate to him.

Moryto’s compositional output is extremely rich and resists simple classification. A preference for using modes and for contrasting details; the ability to create a wide range of moods and to reach the essence of a given ensemble; respect for tradition; subjecting traditional structures to creative innovations; maintaining a balance between the ingenuity of the structure and the depth of content; sensitivity to tone colour; striking sincerity of musical expression – all these features make this music sophisticated and fresh, allowing us to keep on discovering new qualities. The presented album consist of premiere recordings of chamber string pieces created between 2003 and 2017.

The nature of this repertoire is perfectly reflected by the words of the master himself, who, after having received the honorary doctorate of Keimyung University in Daegu, said: ‘My output has been constantly commenting on life and all its shades. It is about referring to things big and small, temporary and timeless. It is also a nostalgic return to a world that no longer exists, to the cultural heritage of the past.’ It is therefore an invitation to the inner world of a proud highlander from Łącko, shaped by the rich musical traditions of his family home and by the community in which he grew up, speaking in a very modern language rooted in folk and religious zeal, to which he would longingly return from the best concert venues.

The Prima Vista String Quartet
is one of the most interesting and best Polish chamber ensembles. It was established as the "Prima Vista" Quartet in the 1990s by the musicians of the Polish Chamber Orchestra of Jerzy Maksymiuk, who have since devoted themselves entirely to playing in a chamber ensemble and to playing in a concert hall.

Jerzy Maksymiuk's Polish Chamber Orchestra, who have since devoted themselves entirely to playing in a chamber ensemble and developing an artistically coherent sound.

For almost three decades, they have had the opportunity to perform a diverse repertoire on all continents. This includes works of world chamber literature, and of particular interest to the Quartet "Prima Vista" has always enjoyed the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A discovery of the members of the ensemble was the works of Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, as well as Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

The quartet has collaborated with outstanding Polish and foreign soloists: pianists Ewa Pobłocka, Piotr Paleczny, Janusz Olejniczek and others.
