Info for Should I Stay or Should I Go?
Marc Collin, the creator of Nouvelle Vague, never anticipated producing a fifth album for the project, originally envisioning it as a one-off tribute to post-punk through bossa nova. However, the unexpected success of their debut album, featuring unique covers of songs by XTC, Public Image Limited, Josef K, and Joy Division, propelled Nouvelle Vague into unforeseen popularity. Collin attributes their success to the timing of the post-punk revival and the emotional resonance achieved by blending bossa nova with melancholic music. He also suggests that their French identity played a significant role, as their willingness to reinterpret songs without treating them as sacred, along with French vocals, contributed to the project's appeal.
Despite initially considering Nouvelle Vague as a short-lived endeavor, Collin reflects on its enduring success over 20 years, marked by diverse albums covering French new wave artists, original compositions, and unique reinterpretations of various musical styles. The latest album, Should I Stay Or Should I Go, continues the trend, featuring pop-infused renditions of post- punk classics. Collin sees no reason to end Nouvelle Vague, as streaming keeps their music alive and the audience remains interested, even attracting younger listeners. Additionally, Collin notes the project's influence on the trend of radically reworked cover versions in advertisements and movies, highlighting the enduring impact of Nouvelle Vague's innovative approach to music.
Nouvelle Vague
Marc Collin
Known today worldwide as Nouvelle Vague’s producer, Marc Collin has always been associated with a multitude of projects since the very start of his musical career back in the late 80s.
Everything started around 1986, in a suburb West of Paris where Marc first met and played with a group of musicians who later would become known as the “Versailles Touch”: Nicolas Godin (a future member of Air), Alex Gopher, Arnaud Rebotini (a future member of Black Strobe) and especially Xavier Jamaux with whom he later would form Ollano.
Being strongly influenced by British New Wave, Marc Collin released a few tapes on his own label, New Horizon, which eventually will be released on vinyl on Domestica records in 2017.
In the late 80’s, Marc discovered house and techno music. In '92, under a new moniker (“Indurain”), Marc Collin produced his first track for PUR, a house compilation of French artists including Arnaud Rebotini, Jérôme Mestre and dj Erik Rug.
Riding this newfound wave, Indurain signed with the Rosebud label and in the fall of '94 released an album, influenced by the sound of then: acid jazz.
Afterwards, Marc Collin started exploring other directions and offered Xavier Jamaux to collaborate on an experimental French pop record. This would become Ollano (released in '96 on Rosebud) with a very successful single “Latitudes” sung by Helena Noguerra.
The album was also released in the USA, garnering them a great deal of respect and admiration. Their success happened a couple of years before the famous “French
Touch” hype broke through and resulted in Air remixing “Latitudes”.
By the end of the 90s, Marc Collin had been very active in different genres with diverse projects and collaborations: releasing on prestigious labels such as Mo Wax, Source, Paper Records, Output Records, Crammed, 20:20 Vision, Tigersushi etc.; collaborating with talented artists as Volga Select with Ivan Smagghe, Dirty Jesus with Eric Rug, Suburbia, Dynamo, and writing scores for movies (les Kidnappeurs,Riviera,J aurais voulu etre un danseur)
His first album release under his own name only happened in 2002: Marc Collin presents “Les Pétroleuses”, which was a soundtrack tribute to themes of movies frorm the 60’s and 70’s movies, with Camille featuring on two tracks.
In the same year he also produced Avril’s album on Fcom and the debut album from Sir Alice.
In 2003, he worked out one of his earlier ideas: rearranging famous and cult post punk classics in a bossa nova style. Marc Collin wanted to prove that the equation “New Wave = Bossa Nova = Nouvelle Vague” brings more then the literal translation and exemplifies that those classics are basically good written songs that can work with any arrangement.
The first Nouvelle Vague album (co written with Olivier Libaux) is released in 2004 on Peacefrog, with the follow up “Bande à Part” released in 2006 on the same label. International media are unanimous in good reviews, the world wide tour is a success and sales count up to more than 1 million units world wide until now.
Through his label Kwaidan that will celebrate his 25 years in 2018, Marc Collin has produced and released many artists through the years like the successful Yasmine Hamdan (whom her song Hal for the Jarmusch movie “Only lovers left alive” was Grammy award nominated) Maxence Cyrin, Phoebe Killdeer, Jay Jay Johnasson, Brisa Roché, Corine and many more.
Under different names he has recorded and released solo albums such as Two for the Road,Hollywood mon amour and Bristol.
In 2015 Nouvelle vague starts a collaboration with Le meridien/starwood and keep on touring worldwide following the release of the album “I could be happy”;
In 2016 he won an award for his soundtrack for the Mexican movie,Tiempo felice.
Finally in 2017, he has decided to follow his first ambition, being a film maker and launch a new company, The Perfect Kiss, to produce his movies and documentaries.
This album contains no booklet.
