The Netherlands’ best-known trumpeter, Eric Vloeimans, has invited the big band Licks & Brains to perform a show featuring spectacular new arrangements of his own music. Vloeimans’ compositions reimagined for big band: grand, funky and swinging. “Licks & Brains’ unique approach, energy and sound create a whole new atmosphere around my music,” says Vloeimans.

Licks & Brains have previously collaborated with big names such as Robben Ford, Benjamin Herman, Joseph Bowie (Defunkt), Ntjam Rosie, Anton Goudsmit and remixers Kraak & Smaak.

Saxophonist, conductor and arranger Rolf Delfos of Licks & Brains on this unique collaboration: ‘With Vloeimans’ pieces, we’re exploring new musical paths that other big bands don’t usually venture down’.

The impressive repertoire of Licks & Brains also comes to life again. The eighteen-piece band brings a mix of brass instruments, electronic grooves and Vloeimans' playing.

The result: a musical journey that moves between jazz, afrofunk, minimal music, soul, funk and dance. "With Vloeimans' pieces we explore new musical paths that other big bands typically don't venture into." It's no wonder that the members of Licks & Brains are enthusiastic about this renewed collaboration.

Licks & Brains
are a Dutch 18 piece Soul/Funk/Jazz big band directed by Rolf Delfos, recording artist of over 100 records and one of the leading alto-players in the Netherlands. Licks & Brains performs with top-artists from the Dutch Jazz/Funk scene. Licks & Brains' latest project is Electric Minds, featuring Eric Vloeimans. The album is produced by Edison winner Bart Wirtz and Oscar de Jong of EDM act Kraak & Smaak, who together have created an organic blend of horns, electronic grooves and the adventurous playing of Vloeimans.

Eric Vloeimans
(1963) is an improvisational trumpeter and composer who finds the term ‘jazz’ too restrictive for his music. His work is characterised by a melodic and lyrical power, and a distinctive, individual sound that is described as velvety or whispering in his more subdued pieces. His motto is: ‘I make music for millions, but I haven’t reached them all yet’. However, he never panders to the tastes of the general public, and always remains true to himself.

Vloeimans studied at the Rotterdam Conservatoire; initially classical trumpet, later on the jazz course. In the United States, he took lessons with Donald Byrd and was a member of the big bands led by Frank Foster and Mercer Ellington.
