Info for Uaná Barret: Vagalume

"Vagalume" reflects the pianist's musical career since childhood and features compositions spanning a decade of musical creation. Recorded at Estúdio Arsis in São Paulo, the album has 10 tracks, including two suites and a sonata for solo piano, and will be released in its entirety on 4 October this year. For the launch, the artist has selected three singles that will be released individually: ‘Vagalume’, ‘Universo Esperança’ and ‘Suíte pra Lia’.

Since childhood, when he began his studies, Paraíba pianist Uaná Barreto has been building a rich narrative of sound, expressed in his debut project as a composer. The first single, ‘Vagalume’, has the luxurious collaboration of the acclaimed Quinteto da Paraíba. In it, the piano outlines the intricate dialogue of melodies and counterpoints of the strings, exploring contrasts and colourful resonances. ‘Vagalume’ features rich, dynamic harmonies and innovative percussive moments. Originally composed for solo piano and reimagined during the pandemic, this track found its definitive form in 2023, now arranged for piano and string quintet.

In the Tupi language, ‘Uaná’ means Vagalume, the title chosen for this autobiographical album by Paraíba pianist Uaná Barreto. Since childhood, when he began his studies, Barreto has been building a rich narrative of sound, expressed in this, his debut project as a composer.

"Vagalume",flies aesthetically over a vast spectrum of global music, blending harmoniously with the creative spirit of Brazilian music. From his first musical immersions, marked by concerts in João Pessoa, through the rich heritage of classical music - from Prokofiev to Villa-Lobos, from Bartók to Kapustin - Uaná Barreto's music incorporates complex African polyrhythms, the essence of jazz and the contemporary music of icons such as Toninho Horta, Egberto Gismonti and Pat Metheny.

His piano renditions include the suite ‘Reza a Lenda’, which evokes figures from Brazilian folklore such as Curupira, Iara, Mula-Sem-Cabeça, Cumade Fulozinha, Neguinho do Pastoreio and Saci-Pererê, through which the composer floats in atonal and modal landscapes. The title track, ‘Vagalume’, has the luxurious collaboration of the acclaimed Quinteto da Paraíba. In it, the piano outlines the intricate dialogue of melodies and counterpoints of the strings, exploring contrasts and colourful resonances.
