Info for Sonorités de Paris

The album title "Sonorités de Paris" is taken from the miniature Sonorités... by the all but forgotten Parisian composer Jean Roger-Ducasse and at the same time refers to the richly varied soundscape of the city around 1900. On the album, I explore four composers who coloured the Parisian musical landscape at the time: César Franck, Jean Roger-Ducasse, Lili Boulanger and Gabriel Fauré.

Florian Verweij, piano

Recorded July 18-20, 2024 at Muziekcentrum van de Omroep, Hilversum
Engineered by Guido Tichelman & Pim van der Lee
Executive producer: Barbara Rumora-Scheltema and Hein Wiedijk

Florian Verweij
(1997) stands out with his frank and imaginative playing, filling his music with poetry, narrative power and spontaneity. ‘He is a true poet at the piano with a vast technical arsenal, which he always uses in deeply musical ways; someone with crystal-clear intelligence, sensitivity and musical understanding,’ said pianist and Liszt specialist Leslie Howard. In 2023, Florian made his debut at The Concertgebouw in front of a sold-out Kleine Zaal. His debut album will be released by Gutman Records in late 2024.

In 2023, Florian completed his master's with Naum Grubert at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with highest distinction. In 2020, he also completed his bachelor with piano pedagogue Jan Wijn with highest distinction. During the bachelor, Florian was admitted to the class of Eliso Virsaladze in Italy, with whom he has regularly taken lessons since then.

Even at a young age, Florian attracted attention at competitions with his forthright playing. He won prizes at the Princess Christina Competition, the Young Pianist Foundation Competition and the Steinway Piano Competition. Most recently, Florian won first prize at the International Magnus Piano Competition in Lithuania (2021) and was a finalist at the leading Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists (2018). He performed solo with Amsterdam Sinfonietta, among others, and was in demand as soloist with the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Since 2018, Florian has regularly participated in family and school performances by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In recent years, he has been invited to perform in Spain, Lithuania, Georgia, Greece, Canada and the US.

"Schumann's Arabesque became pure poetry under his hands." (Dagblad van het Noorden, 2023)
