Biography De Profundis

The Ensemble De Profundis
was founded in 1999 by Peter Kooij – a world-renowned baritone and specialist in early music, whose work is documented on over 150 CDs, including more than 40 each with the Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe and the Bach Collegium Japan under Masaaki Suzuki – with the aim of providing appropriate accompaniment for singers in accordance with historical performance practice. From the principal singers and soloists of top-tier ensembles, a sensitive and dedicated group has emerged, committed to this ideal. With a variable lineup, adapted to the requirements of each repertoire, the focus is on the music of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Besides Peter Kooij himself, De Profundis regularly collaborates with artists such as Margot Oitzinger, Hana Blažíková, Robin Blaze, Jan Kobow, Dorothee Mields, Ingeborg Danz, and Kai Wessel. Invitations to various festivals both in Germany and abroad (Oude Muziek Utrecht, Resonanzen Vienna, Vantaa Baroque Helsinki, Festival de Saint-Michel en Thiérache, Bachwoche Ansbach, Kirchheimer Konzertwinter, Bach Festival Arnstadt, Thüringer Bachwochen, Telemann-Sonntagsmusiken Magdeburg, Aschaffenburger Bachtage, Güldener Herbst, Kloster Michaelstein, Ettlinger Schlosskonzerte, Mexico tours in 2007 and 2008) as well as concerts in cities such as Leipzig, Stuttgart, Paris, Verdun, and Avignon attest to the ensemble's strong appeal.
