Ensemble Bayona & María José Pérez

Biographie Ensemble Bayona & María José Pérez

The Ensemble Bayona
a regular guest at the Auditorio de Zaragoza, focuses its attention on the repertoire of the first half of the 20th century, exploring the bridges between classical and contemporary music. They believe in a musical philosophy free of limitations and prejudices.

The Ensemble Bayona was awarded the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Prize 2020 and made their debut in the Konzerthaus Berlin in October 2021. The concert was recorded by Radio Deutschlandfunk.

Ensemble Bayona believes in the strength of the interdisciplinary nature of music, a perspective that makes every single one of their projects stand out. They were honoured to receive the prize CREAR 2018 from the Youth College of Aragón in recognition of these innovative elements/ideas in their first concert in the Auditorium de Zaragoza. This ensemble has a flexible formation, which combines strings, winds, piano and percussion according to the requirements of each programme. Being Eros Jaca the artistic director, its members are distinguished performers who share the strong desire to rise above the traditional concept of the classical concert and create authentic communication between the performers and the audience.

In Switzerland the Ensemble has performed in the concert series of the Stadttheater Olten and in the renowned Aargauer Kunsthaus, among others, and has collaborated with the association guerillaclassics and the Stanley Thomas Johnson Stiftung. In the 2022/23 season, various concerts are planned in the Auditorio Príncipe Felipe in Oviedo, as well as in the Festival Múver organized by the Department of Aragon (Spain), in the USA (Billings) and in Switzerland.

María José Pérez Rodríguez
was born in Almeria, Spain in 1985. She started performing at a very young age. She has appeared at major flamenco events throughout Spain.

She has won important awards, including the First Prize in the Córdoba National Competition “Don Antonio Chacón” (2007); the First Prize in the Young Flamenco Contest organized by the Seville Peñas Federation and the Bienal de Arte Flamenco (2004); the “Golden Melon” at the International Flamenco Festival in Lo Ferro-Murcia (2003); and the highly coveted Lampara Minera of the International Festival of Cante de las Minas de La Unión (2015).

She participated in various critically acclaimed productions, including Mario Maya’s ‘Diálogo del Amargo’; ‘Andalucía, Flamenco y Humanidad’, ‘Ocho territorios’ and ‘Divino Tesoro,’ among others. The flamencologist Marcos Escánez said about her: “she possesses a clean, brilliant, vigorous voice and rich in nuances, presenting in her performances a very flamenco phrasing and an extraordinary knowledge of the different styles she performs, always in the most orthodox and classic style, with commendable honesty.”
