Biography Jennine Bailey

Jennine Bailey
is a Christchurch jazz singer who has gained a formidable reputation around the country for her individual interpretations of jazz and contemporary music. Tom Rainey is a pianist, conductor and arranger extraordinaire. Together they have produced a new album of classic songs with strings, entitled In the Mood for Love. Featuring brand new arrangements, this concert will be the first live performance of this wonderful fusion of jazz and contemporary music with vocals by Jennine Bailey, a rhythm section, soloists and string players.

Injecting new life and complexity into jazz standards, such as Night and Day, Moonlight in Vermont, No Moon at All and Wild is the Wind, other titles have been carefully selected from contemporary styles including New Zealand pop standards, Oughta Be in Love (Dave Dobbyn) and spirituals Wade in the Water. Jennine Bailey (vocals) and Tom Rainey accompanied by rhythm section, soloists and a ten piece string ensemble from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

Recently performing as the finale act in the acclaimed 2015 Christchurch Summertimes Lazy Sunday concert series, Jennine Bailey is a name synonymous with style and individuality in the New Zealand jazz and adult contemporary music worlds. Singer, performer and recording artist, Jennine puts her own soulful and unique stamp on every song she sings, and refuses to be defined or limited by one genre. Equally comfortable with performing to 100,000 people or to an intimate concert of fifty, Jennine goes from strength to strength. She has headlined sold-out shows for the Tauranga, Christchurch, Nelson and Queenstown Jazz and Blues Festivals many times during her performing career, and has performed alongside such luminaries as Ray Wolf, Roger Fox, Midge Marsden, Whirimako Black, Hollie Smith, Stu Buchanan, Tom Rainey and Doug Caldwell. Often compared with Eva Cassidy, Mahalia Jackson and Norah Jones, Jennine’s performances have seen enthusiastic audiences respond with standing ovations.

Jennine released her debut album ‘You go to my head’, and was voted one of the three winners in an international jazz competition voted for by over 30,000 people world-wide. A versatile performer, Jennine gave a critically acclaimed performance as Mary Magdalene in Showbiz’s Jesus Christ Superstar and has performed solos for Coco-Cola Christmas in the Park, Nelson Opera in the Park, Classical Sparks, and Starry Nights with Wellington Vector and Christchurch Symphony Orchestras. Her next album ‘In the mood for love’ will be released this year.
