Review Duo Meyer II Waldburger — Initio II – Terra – Ignis

It starts off oddly: the album Initio II – Terra – Ignis by the duo Meyer II Waldburger opens with a cleverly intertwined 7/4 beat followed by 5/4, distributed between guitar and piano. It sounds familiar, while encouraging musical mindfulness. A meaningful message?

Without question, pianist Marcel Waldburger and Gabriel Meyer, who plays bass in addition to guitar, are masters of their instruments. Trained in classical music and jazz, they blend elements of both genres into a unique mix. Pleasing to the ear and pleasing to discerning ears that demand not only melodious sounds but also surprises and challenges. Why is that?

Feuer von Gibraltar, for example, skilfully oscillates between classical guitar gestures, flamenco interjections and jazz feel, appropriately supported and carried by the piano. This is because the only melodic percussion instrument likes to use the rhythmic component of its existence as a framework. This structure is noticeable in all five tracks. There is the tangible melodiousness of the music. At the same time, there are repeated breaks in which sometimes the keys and sometimes the guitar carry the rhythm.

The album liner notes say that the two Swiss musicians are inspired by “the beauty of nature, landscapes, impressions from other countries and cultures.” This may be the motivation (or inspiration) that, as in Tierra, for example, gives the pieces their underground drive and, alternating with quiet passages, promotes a dialogue of emotions.

As a listener, it is very easy to become immersed in these emotions. The album is recorded and mixed in such a way that, even at realistic volume levels, the instruments placed the duo directly in the listening room, on a small stage like a real living room concert. Rarely can musicians be heard so closely and tangibly from a recording. This is impressive, especially since the instruments sound very authentic.

The album title Initio II – Terra – Ignis translates as Beginning II – Earth – Fire. Its five tracks complete the album Initio I – Auqa – Aer (Beginning I – Water – Air), which was released in May. Both albums are well worth listening to. (Thomas Semmler, HighResMac)
