Info for Poulenc, Cavanna: Le Moine et le Voyou
With Messe, un jour ordinaire, Bernard Cavanna has created an emblematic work that cannot be interpreted in a univocal manner. Like all works that deeply challenge, this piece created in 1994 remains elusive and continues to diffuse a mystery suggested by all the contradictions that the composer carries within him and has introduced into this clash between trivial and tragic. Using an eight-minute
extract from Jean-Michel Carré’s documentary film Galères de femmes, which focuses on a young drug addict seeking to reintegrate herself by talking to members of a charity association, Bernard Cavanna has imagined a furious oratorio. This young woman in disarray, Laurence, a light soprano, enters a church, asks for help and is confronted with the ritual of the mass embodied by a lyric soprano and tenor
who try to silence her in a vehement bel canto, saturating their pomp to the point of delirium.
