Info for Thierry Escaich: Te Deum pour Notre-Dame (Live)

The French composer and organist Thierry Escaich composed his Te Deum pour Notre-Dame, a hymn to the resurrection of the cathedral, a large-scale work for children's choir, two mixed choirs and orchestra for the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. One hundred and eighty singers and instrumentalists premiered the work and recorded it in the famous building on June 12, 2025. Thierry Escaich was inspired by the thousand-year history of the cathedral and drew from numerous sources, starting with the Bible, but also from renowned authors who had written about Notre-Dame, such as Victor Hugo and Charles Péguy. According to Escaich himself, "this Te Deum is a journey from the destructive flames of conflagration to the fire of redemption". Escaich, who has been co-titular organist of the cathedral since 2024, also presents examples of his famous improvisational skills on the cathedral organ between the individual movements of the Te Deum. The work was praised from all sides at its premiere, and some journalists described it as "the great French oratorio we have been waiting for since the beginning of the 21st century." (Le Figaro)

Thierry Escaich
is a unique figure in contemporary music. One of the foremost composers of his generation, he is also a world-renowned organist and one of the major ambassadors of the great French school of improvisation. These three elements of his artistry being inseparable, this captivating musician weaves them together in his performances. Thierry Escaich was appointed titular organist at Notre-Dame de Paris in 2024.

As a composer, Escaich embraces a wide range of genres and forms in a relentless quest for new sonic horizons. His catalogue includes over a hundred works that attract a wide audience thanks to a deeply personal universe: drawing from the French line of composition of Ravel, Messiaen and Dutilleux, while also incorporating elements of popular music and sacred inspiration, his sonic world is defined by incandescent lyricism, obsessive rhythmic drive, and powerful structures.

Escaich’s works are performed by leading orchestras in the world and by musicians such as Lisa Batiashvili, François Leleux, Paul Meyer, Olivier Latry, Andris Nelsons, Alain Altinoglu, Louis Langrée, Lahav Shani, Semyon Bychkov, Paavo Järvi, Valery Gergiev, or Alan Gilbert.

Major recent works in Escaich’s catalogue include Shirine, an opera premiered at the Opéra de Lyon in 2022, a violin concerto, Au-delà du rêve, written for Renaud Capuçon and the Münchner Philharmoniker, a piano concerto, Études symphoniques, for Seong-Jin Cho and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, a cello concerto, Les Chants de l’aube, for Gautier Capuçon, commissioned by Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Ballade for big band and orchestra, premiered by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony and Alain Altinoglu. Besides his symphonic, operatic, and chamber output, organ works occupy a prominent place in his catalogue. His Organ Concerto No.1 was selected as a highlight of the genre in Gramophone magazine.

As an organist and improviser, Thierry Escaich is a guest at major concert halls and festivals, such as Berlin Philharmonie, Vienne Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, Müpa Budapest, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Madrid Auditorio, Auditorium de Radio France, Hong Kong Cultural Center, Lotte Concert Hall, Mariinsky Theater, Moscow Philharmonie, Helsinki Musiikkitalo, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Breme Festival, BBC Proms.

Escaich was Organist and Composer in Residence at the Dresdner Philharmonie in the 22/23 season.

He is also a guest of such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Helsinki Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, and Concerto Budapest.

The main highlight of 24/25 is undeniably the world premiere of his Te Deum pour Notre-Dame, composed to celebrate the reopening, and that was hailed by the press and a packed cathedral.

Escaich was also Composer in Residence at the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and the Philharmonie de Paris dedicated a season-long portrait to him. In this context, the Orchestre de Paris performed the Parisian premiere of Towards the Light for choir and orchestra, conducted by Klaus Mäkelä, after a world premiere with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse.

The 25/26 season will be highlighted by two major world premieres: his Second Concerto for Orchestra, performed by the Orchestre national de France under Cristian Măcelaru, and a symphonic poem for cello and orchestra, inspired by paintings of Renoir and Van Gogh, with Anastasia Kobekina and the Orchestre de chambre de Paris conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock.

He will also open the season of the HRT Symphony Orchestra with Pascal Rophé, playing his Concerto for Organ No. 3, and will be the guest of the Belgian National Symphony Orchestra and the Dortmund Philharmonic. He will go on a recital tour in Japan with venues as the Tokyo Metropolitan Theater, and will among others perform concerts at Notre-Dame de Paris and the Stockholm Konserthus.

His artistic versatility is featured in a highly praised discography, partly published on Universal Music. His album Les Nuits hallucinées was crowned with many distinctions, including a ‘Choc de l’année’ from Classica magazine as an outstanding release of the year. The premiere of Claude, his first opera, was released on DVD by BelAir Classics. Other releases include Baroque Song on Sony Classical, Aria with Richard Galliano, Fusion with the Ellipsos Saxophone Quartet and Cris with the Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France.

Escaich received five ‘Victoires de la Musique’ awards (2003, 2006, 2011, 2017 and 2022), and in 2018 he took the prestigious role of Featured Composer at the Radio France Présences Festival.

In 2013 he received the honour of being appointed to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

He teaches composition and improvisation at Conservatoire de Paris, where he himself studied and earned eight first prizes.
