Info for In Limerence
One of British music’s brightest new talents, Scottish singer-songwriter Jacob Alon cultivates their acclaim with a stunning new debut album.
Jacob releases his debut Dan Carey produced album on Isand. Alon crashed with Carey while working on new music, of which an overarching theme will be limerence: the state of intense romantic longing for someone who often does not reciprocate. Those who have experienced limerence will know it can lead to obsessive thoughts – an infatuation that overlooks any flaws or, indeed, turns those flaws into an attractive trait.
The album is precious, haunting and soul bearing with shades of both Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake. Jacob Alon redefines contemporary folk with their debut album, In Limerence. Featuring the acclaimed singles’ Fairy In A Bottle’, ‘Confession’, and ‘Liquid Gold 25’, the Dan Carey-produced record weaves poetic storytelling with ghostly vocals and intricate guitar work.
“I think the world of fantasy and mysticism always drew me in,” Alon tells me. “I was interested in the creatures of the earth, and telling little stories.” The woods behind the estate became the backdrop to many of their witchy memories (“I remember always making soups and perfumes, I was obsessed with magic and spells and witches”) and was also their first taste of storytelling. “I remember, in school, I recruited this team of mages, and we had this entire story arc that I felt so enraptured by,” Alon – who uses they/them pronouns – explains. “It was rooted in tragedy. My best accomplice turned against me and became my enemy. We’d go through this routine every lunchtime in primary school. It felt like this Oscar-winning performance, when the story reached its peak intensity and all the drama unfolded. I remember, instead of just appreciating it for what it was and letting it be, I’d be like, “Right, again, same moment,” and we’d replay it like five times, just to bask in it.”
If you’re a fan of Adrianne Lenker, Jeff Buckley, or Nick Drake, you’ll feel right at home here - vulnerability spun into something magic.
Jacob Alon
Jacob Alon
is a Scottish singer-songwriter with a profound gift for storytelling. Both intimate and devastatingly introspective, their music is touched by a rare timelessness. Drawing fair comparisons to artists such as Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright, Alon’s sound cuts through the air with powerful and haunting vocals, intricate guitar playing, and pensive, poetic lyrics.
Alon was born and raised by a young single mother in the quiet suburbs of Dunfermline, Fife, between the winding woods and industrial park mystics. They learned their first piano piece from their mum for a school show at age 9 and later picked up the guitar at 15, enchanted by the intimate, somber beauty of wizards such as Nick Drake and Adrianne Lenker.
Alon began writing songs in school as a way of making friends laugh but never considered a career in music possible until much later. While studying medicine at university, Jacob found themself deeply confused and unhappy, only finding joy when making music. To the disapproval of their family, they decided to drop out and pursue their true dream full-time. Creating is part of who Jacob fundamentally is – a lens by which they process and understand experiences in the world.
You’ll often find Jacob playing in the folk bars of Edinburgh and sneaking into places they shouldn’t be. They like roasted aubergines and great Scots Pines, and appreciate the cozy smell of warm wet earth outside their window as they dance, naked, in their flat when no one else is home.
