Whispering Trees
is a trio that pushes the boundaries of jazz in an adventurous and unpretentious way, crafting a sound that is truly their own. Their music, recorded with great attention to detail, is subtle yet powerful, showcasing the trio's remarkable craftsmanship and deep musical chemistry.
The group consists of Daniel Jonkers (drums & composition), Yu-Ting Li (piano), and Vitja Pauwels (guitar). Led by drummer Daniel Jonkers, a Brussels-based musician originally from Geleen, the trio has been steadily developing its presence in the jazz community. Daniel completed his Bachelor of Music at the Conservatory of Maastricht in 2016 and later earned his Master of Music. Daniel’s talents have not gone unnoticed—he won the EU Jazz Young Talent Award in 2014 for his distinctive choices, precise timing, and dynamic style. In 2018, he received the Toots Thielemans Jazz Award alongside Federico Stocchi as the most outstanding musicians graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. In August 2024, Whispering Trees released their debut single, ‘Off To’. This motivational jazz piece seamlessly blends eclectic influences with rich guitar tones. Its dynamic composition highlights the trio's musical synergy and hints at even more exciting work to come.
Daniel Jonkers
1993 born in Geleen (The Netherlands) is a Brussels based drummer. He is very active in the music scene in and outside of Brussels since moving there in 2015. He completed his Bachelor of Music at the Conservatory of Maastricht in 2016 with Ron van Stratum and Arnoud Gerritse and he finished his Master of Music with, among others, Stéphane Galland, Kris Defoort and John Ruocco in 2018.
In 2014 he won the EU Jazz Young Talent Award. Words from the jury:“ Daniel took our attention by his way warded choices, great timing and impressive dynamics.
In 2018 he won the Toots Thielemans Jazz Award from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels together with Federico Stocchi for most outstanding musicians finishing their studies.
The Newspaper “ The Limburger” in The Netherlands called Daniel “a rhythmic painter in Europe’s capital with roots from Limburg” in a special article about him in 2019.
Daniel performs in all kinds of bands with many different constellations where either he co-composes/arranges music for or is active as a sideman.
Some currently active bands are: Aligaga, Nicolas Thys “Sound Circus”, Nabou Claerhout’s Trombone Ensemble, Louise van den Heuvel “Sonic Hug” or Lennert Baerts “Profound Observer & Bert Joris”.
As of September 2023 Daniel is teaching jazz drums at the Conservatory of Maastricht.
In 2024 he will release several compositions written by him under the name “Whispering Trees” together with Yu-Ting Li and Vitja Pauwels on the label Télès Music.
