Info for Johann Sebastian Bach: Violin Concertos BWV 1041-1043, BWV 1060R

C. P. E. Bach reports in his obituary for his father that he preferred to conduct the orchestra on the violin rather than from the harpsichord. Whether he wrote his violin concertos for himself or for a guest soloist can no longer be said with certainty today. In this ACCENT recording, Florian Deuter and Mónica Waisman share the famous solo concertos BWV 1041 and BWV 1042 between them as soloists. The recording is complemented by the double concertos BWV 1043 and BWV 1060R, which could be reconstructed after the double concerto for two harpsichords.

Did he write them for the Duke of Weimar, who promoted him to concertmaster in 1714, for the prince in Köthen, who made him Kapellmeister of his elite ensemble in 1717, or only as Leipzig's Thomaskantor for the virtuosos of the student Collegium musicum, with whom he performed weekly from 1729? The origins of Johann Sebastian Bach's violin concertos remain a mystery to musicologists to this day. However, they are undoubtedly among his most magnificent compositions! Harmonie Universelle now turns their brilliant aspects into an experience just as much as the inimitably ‘Bachian’ intensity of the lyrical movements.

Harmonie Universelle
Florian Deuter, violin
Monica Waisman, violin, conductor

Mónica Waisman
studied violin at the renowned Oberlin College and continued her studies in The Hague on the baroque violin. This was followed by a career with some of Europe's best-known early music ensembles and orchestras, which took her on tours all over the world. She currently performs regularly in Europe, North and South America, including with the ensemble Musica Temprana, with whom she rediscovers treasures of 18th century music literature from Latin America. She is also in constant demand as a chamber musician, concertmaster and soloist with various ensembles in Europe and South America.

Florian Deuter
is one of the leading baroque violinists of his generation. He began his career in 1987 with Reinhard Goebel's Musica Antiqua Köln, where he was concertmaster from 1994 to 2000. He was soon invited to lead other renowned early music ensembles. For example, he was concertmaster with the Gabrieli Consort under the direction of Paul McCreesh, the Chapelle Royale and Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe and Marc Minkowski's Musiciens du Louvre. He has also performed as a soloist and concertmaster with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman, the European Baroque Orchestra and Concerto Köln.
