Info for Bach • Reich
In December 2001, Sophie Cherrier's flute class at the Paris Conservatoire met in concert around a flagship work: Steve Reich's Vermont Counterpoint. The parts were distributed amongst the students, while the teacher took up the solo line; at the podium stood a very young, sparkling and charismatic conductor, the former flautist FrançoisXavier Roth. Before the final collective work, the students each performed a piece for solo flute from the repertoire, and Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita was assigned to me. The meetings over the course of a musician's life can be decisive, and this was the case twenty years later: Sophie Cherrier brought me a humanist, generous, ultra-technical and uncompromising pedagogy, and François -Xavier Roth, when he founded his orchestra Les Siècles a handful of years after this concert, did me the honour of trusting me to join the adventure, which was to become the beating heart of my professional activity as well as the seat of a personal musical revolution, thanks in particular to learning to play on period instruments. This crossroads concert was then a summit meeting, the convergence of two utterly inspiring lines. Fascinated by this Bach/Reich experience, the idea of juxtaposing two monstres sacrés on one album emerged quite naturally as a direct continuation of the work we do in Les Siècles: playing each work on the historical instrument for which it was created and putting into perspective several works separated by centuries but united by one idea. ...
