Info for Betsubara

The heart of this project is the creation of Betsubara, a new concerto for accordion and string orchestra, written and performed by accordionist-composer Gwen Cresens together with Boho Strings. The title Betsubara comes from Japanese and means “second stomach.” For Cresens, this refers to the concept of the program: the two Bach concertos central to this trajectory continually awaken desire and simultaneously form the basis for the new composition. The program includes two concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach: the Concerto in F minor (BWV 1056) and the Concerto in G minor (BWV 1058). Traditionally, these works are performed on harpsichord or piano, but in this project, the accordion plays a central role. Cresens creates his own cadenzas based on improvisations, rooted in the eclecticism that is so defining for his musical path. These cadenzas form the direct link—indeed, the building blocks—of Betsubara. The new concerto Betsubara, in turn, features three movements that reflect this logic in a more lighthearted variation: Breakfast – Allegro, Lunch – Adagio, and Dinner – Allegro ma non troppo. This creates an intriguing field of tension in which Bach's seriousness and heaviness are mirrored by the light-footedness of the new composition.
