Info for Sounds Of Duality
Oleg Surgutschow, who comes from the Ukraine, began his musical education at the age of 7 in his hometown Kharkov. His grandmother was the first piano teacher. Already in his early childhood he showed talent and interest for music and technique. These two worlds lived and developed independently in his life. At the age of 15, he began studying piano with Prof. Alexander Bassilov at the famous Moscow Music College "Gnessiny". In addition to piano, he studied sound direction with Prof. Igor Veprintsev in his second major. After successful diploma examinations he graduated from the Music Academy in 1992 and devoted himself to music production. Numerous engagements as a chamber musician and sound engineer followed, which, among others, have led him to Germany since the mid-90s.
As a solo artist and chamber musician he was often to be seen on many concert stages. The present recording was partly made at the Duisburg Theater. Since 2012, Oleg Surgutschow has been living in Zurich, where he is chief sound engineer at the Zurich Opera House. In addition to maintaining high artistic sound standards, he develops new ideas and breaks new ground in the field of sound engineering.
The program presented on "Sounds of Duality" consists of two parts. The first romantic part is a tribute to the favorite romantics: Schubert, Schumann, Chopin and Scriabin. The second part is dedicated to jazz. There are four concert etudes from "Six Concert Etudes" by Daniel Kramer, who, by the way, is also the author of es Kharkov. These two parts differ not only in style and sound, but also in type and tone color of the instruments, since they were recorded on different instruments. If romantics need a Steinway concert grand piano, the artist has chosen a keyboard for the Jazz Etudes. But despite these differences there is something that connects all these works. The combination of the classical playing technique with the jazz style in the concert etudes is a logical continuation in the development of piano art, which has its roots in the epochs of classicism and romanticism.
