Info for Charles Gounod Cäcilienmesse

Resounding tradition and intimate moments in the Mainz Cathedral: This recording of Charles Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass was made as part of last year's Christmas concert in the Mainz Cathedral.

The instrumentation for the Christmas festive occasion is lavish, using a large orchestra and instrumentation typical of late Romanticism.

A sublime simplicity is combined with operatic-dramatic elements. Gounod's contemporary Saint-Saëns wrote enthusiastically: "A glow emanated from the music – one is first dazzled, then enchanted, then overwhelmed.”

Intimate moments and immersion in the expansive sound, the play of dynamics and the remarkably transparent ensembles, despite the sheer size of the instrumentation, ensure a recording that is both atmospheric and at the same time exciting!

Karsten Storck, Domkapellmeister

Karsten Storck
Born in Gütersloh in 1973, Karsten Storck began his musical training as a member of the boys’ choir at the city’s church of St Pankratius, before he studied Catholic church music at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen between 1997 and 2003. He was awarded a concert diploma with distinction for his organ playing in 2005. While active in Wuppertal, he worked with children and adolescents in numerous musical projects hosted by schools and other public institutions. Between 2005 and 2012, he was cantor at Mainz Cathedral and directed the church’s girls’ choir, with whom he was victorious at the 50th international choir festival at Loreto (Italy) in 2009. Three CD productions and the choir’s concert appearances at home and abroad give evidence to the ensemble’s artistic achievements. Karsten Storck was appointed as Domkapellmeister at Mainz Cathedral in March 2012 and has now been responsible for the over four-hundred musicians across the Cathedral’s various ensembles since August 2012. In addition, he tutors students in music education and church music at the Musikhochschule des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz in leading children‘s and youth choirs; he also acts as organ inspector for the diocese of Mainz.
