Info for Hindemith: Das Marienleben, Op. 27
"The greatest song cycle ever written." - Glenn Gould is very unequivocal in his judgement of Paul Hindemith's Das Marienleben, based on a collection of poems by Rainer Maria Rilke.
The notorious bourgeois terror, then only 27 years old, shows a very different, internalized side here.
"There is something in these songs that forces and fascinates the listener beyond all habits of conventional song manner," wrote a reviewer in 1923, and to this day there is nothing to add.
Yvonne Friedli and Constantin Alex make it palpable in their sensitive interpretation.
Yvonne Friedli is a Swiss soprano living in Berlin. Together with the pianist Constantin Alex, she will perform "Das Marienleben" by Paul Hindemith after poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. The cycle is framed by "4 letzte Lieder" by Richard Strauss.

The Swiss soprano Yvonne Friedli studied at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin with Norma Sharp and Thomas Quasthoff. Master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Peter Konwitschny and Irvin Cage complete your training.
Already during her studies she sang Pfitzner's "Christelflein", Mozart's "Magic Flute" and "Die Entführung aus dem Seraglio" as well as R. Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos".
Since her successful engagement at the Landestheater Neustrelitz, she has been continuously expanding her range of roles with Byron Knutson, Berlin and, since 2021, with vocal coach Kirsten Schötteldreier, Amsterdam, with demanding roles in the young-dramatic subject (including Salome "Salome", Chrysothemis "Elektra", Donna Anna from "Don Giovanni", Elsa "Lohengrin", Elisabeth and Venus "Tannhäuser", Mariza "Countess Mariza", Rosalinde "Fledermaus").
At the same time, she appears regularly as a concert and oratorio singer in prestigious locations such as Zurich, Berlin, Oxford and Vienna.
Recitals (P. Hindemith "Das Marienleben", R. Strauss, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Brahms) complete the artist's extensive repertoire.
Neos Music has released a CD with songs by the Amberg composer HE Erwin Walter and Coviello Classics will release "Das Marienleben" by Paul Hindemith in 2022.
With the spectacular replacement in the main role of Sophie Charlotte at the world premiere of Harder's opera "Sophie Charlotte" at the Landestheater Neustrelitz, she received positive media attention throughout Germany.
