Info for Etudes of Shapes and Forms

“Imagine being under a blue sky, drinking cold water and watching a David Lynch movie: that’s how the music sounds’, says Philipp Rüttgers about his new album Etudes of Shapes and Forms. For this the pianist has taken ideas from masterworks by innovative composers such as Ligeti, Schönberg and Debussy. With these methods, he portrays a whole range of emotions, from joy and excitement to relaxation.

Pianist and composer Philipp Rüttgers, of German descent, has been active in the Dutch jazz scene for 15 years. On his new album 'Etudes of Shapes and Forms' he can be heard, for the first time, in an acoustic piano trio, featuring the versatile Thomas Pol on double bass and rising star Sun-Mi Hong on drums.

For this record, Philipp was inspired by pianists/composers such as Craig Taborn, Kris Davis and Sylvie Courvoisier, where he mainly focused on 'shapes and forms'. He explains: “Shapes as in harmonic and rhythmic structures, and forms as in arranging with bass and drums and the structure of improvisation and composition.”

Philipp Rüttgers
has a gift expressing emotions of our everyday life through music, creating his very personal style of colours and sounds. Praised as a renewal mind of music, an excellent composer and a virtuosic but tender pianist, Philipp crosses different genres with ease propelling music to a guaranteed excitement.

Born in Kreuzberg Berlin, based in Amsterdam, Philipp shapes his personal artistic voice as a professional piano player, composer and improviser in the field of jazz and contemporary music.

“Rüttgers’ compositions manage to match a sense of mystery with joyful excitement, and organic flow with strong structures….The improvisations highlight the rich and imaginative sonic palettes of Rüttgers” (Salt – Peanuts Eyal Hareuveni)

“Across the board and very expressively, his acoustic piano trio excels with outstanding instrumentalists: Thomas Pol on double bass and Sun-Mi Hong on drums. They excellently underline Philipp Rüttgers’ abstract and idiosyncratic lyrical piano playing, which bears witness to a creative and personal vision of contemporary music, both classical and jazz.” (Jazzhalo – Bernard Lefévre)
