Info for Islandsmoens Requiem
Sigurd Islandsmoen's Requiem for soloists, choir and orchestra is a unique flower in the Norwegian music flora. Throughout the 1940s and 50s the work enjoyed huge success both in Norway and abroad thanks to its beautiful and accessible latin and folk music based musical language. And then, mysteriously, the music disappeared and the work was buried in the dust of oblivion for several decades. But now it has been revived and restored to its former glory, a source of inspiration to future generations.
The sound quality throughout is warm, clear and captures the acoustic of Kristiansand Cathedral with an almost tangible realism.
Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1919 and is a regional institution which covers the two Agder counties (Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder). The orchestra is based in Kristiansand and organises concerts on its own as well as participating widely in other productions, such as concerts and opera performances organised by other music organisations in the region of Aust- and Vest-Agder. Eighteen professional musicians, 80 per cent of the entire orchestra occupying the permanent positions, forms yet another music group, the Kristiansand Chamber Orchestra. The remaining 20 per cent are only part time, but they enable the chamber orchestra to perform scores for symphony orchestras.
