One might wonder whether the world of music really needs a CD of new chamber works for bassoon and piano. Aren’t there already enough productions in the wide- ranging category of contemporary chamber music?
Berthold Große and Oliver Drechsel, who are also initiators of this recording, met each other many years ago at an audition in Germany (Cologne). Oliver was then accompanying a large number of candidates on the piano, but the normal routine was abruptly shattered by one candidate who burst upon the scene and made him wonder: what was going on here? From the first round to the last, this initial encounter immediately revealed to both a sense of a mutually compatible musical conception and style that was significantly different from the mass of other candidates. In a sense, two needles had been found in a hay- stack!
Not at all! The attentive listener will be able to confirm that there is still plenty to be discovered after enjoying listening to this recording. All the pieces on this disc are ‘new’ in the best sense of the word – not just because of their year of composition but also because of their subject. The combination of works by young German composers (Cologne) and one Swede (Stock- holm) contributes especially to the special appeal of this disc.
The bassoon is a magnificent instrument which, we believe, deserves to be in focus, in the spotlight, much more than it has been so far – at the front of the stage, and not – as is so often the case–at the back of the orchestra pit!
