For the second volume of their complete recording of Mendelssohn's symphonic works, Les Ambassadeurs and La Grande Écurie combine two works that were influenced by the composer's trip to the British Isles in 1829 and his visit to Fingal's Cave. This natural wonder is located on the island of Staffa, which is part of the Inner Hebrides. The overture The Hebrides is heard here in the version composed in Rome in 1830, while the Scottish Symphony, which the composer completed 13 years after his inspiring journey, is heard in its first version from 1842.
