Info for Bizet sans Paroles
Although best-known as a composer of orchestral and operatic music, Georges Bizet (1838-75) was also a virtuoso of the piano, for which he left a number of first-rate works. This disc assembles several of his piano pieces and transcriptions alongside arrangements of his works by other composers.
"Apart from his operas, Georges Bizet is usually only known for his Symphony and the Arlésienne Suites and certainly not for his piano music. The complete works fit on two CDs and have already been recorded twice. The 32-year-old Frenchman Nathanaël Gouin has selected only two original pieces, furthermore he transcribed the Nadir aria himself and he also plays the Arlésienne minuet in the Rachmaninov transcription. The longest work is Bizet’s transcription for solo piano of Camille Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto. The concerto is one of the most virtuosic in literature, although it begins with a tender Andante sostenuto. In the Bizet works Gouin was not particularly challenged, but in the concerto he can show the whole range of his artistry, from the finely sensitive to the stormy virtuoso.
But also in the other pieces of this well recorded production one can admire Nathanaël Gouin’s art of differentiation, his sensitive, nuanced touch and his solid technique and phrasing." (pizzicato.lu)
