Info for Agostino Steffani: Psalmodia vespertina, Stabat Mater

Agostino Steffani is one of the most remarkable figures of the European Baroque period. He was not only a composer, but also a priest and diplomat. He directed the Hanover Opera and influenced some of the most important musicians of his time with his work. This recording combines his Psalmodia vespertina (1674) with the posthumously published Stabat Mater. The psalms are notated for double choir and organ, but are presented here in a richer instrumentation with strings and wind instruments as well as alternations between solos and tutti.

Collegium Vocale Hannover
The aim of the Collegium Vocale Hannover is to make music in its various styles lively, differentiated and meaningful in terms of content. The chamber choir, which has been led by Florian Lohmann since 2010, has enriched Hanover's musical life since 2004.

The choir's approximately forty singers combine voluntary commitment with professional standards in the Collegium and regularly take on solo roles. In addition, the Collegium Vocale Hannover works with outstanding vocal soloists and specialists in historical performance practice in the oratorio area in search of new listening experiences. The choir's repertoire includes sacred and secular works from all eras; one focus is on the performance of a cappella church music works from the ancient world and contemporary vocal music, including premieres.

Florian Lohmann
has been the artistic director of the Collegium Vocale Hannover since 2010. Under his leadership, the Collegium developed into one of the most respected chamber choirs in Lower Saxony, repeatedly took part in choir competitions and won several prizes, most recently at the German Choir Competition in 2018. The Collegium's concert tours to Belgium, Spain and Israel as well as to well-known festivals and concert series in Germany document Lohmann's work, as do several CD productions.

Florian Lohmann began his musical career as a singer in the Hanover Boys' Choir. After studying at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, Lohmann worked as a freelance choir director, singer and singing teacher. He taught at the music colleges in Hanover (singing, voice training) and Detmold (choir conducting). Since 2019, Lohmann has been Professor of Choral Conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main, where he directs the Chamber Choir and the University Choir of the HfMDK, among others.
