Info for From the Beginning

Marc Bouchkov's From the Beginning is a personal exploration of the violinist's musical identity, centerer on the enduring influence of Jascha Heifetz. With pianist Julien Quentin, Bouchkov draws on the remarkable breadth of repertoire associated with Heifetz, from Albéniz, Ponce and Debussy to Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Gershwin. Alongside Heifetz's celebrated transcriptions are works by Kroll and Mendelssohn, Heifetz's own When You Make Love to Me, written under the pseudonym Jim Hoyl, and Bouchkov's original composition Facets. Together, the program reflects the elegance, virtuosity and curiosity of Heifetz while revealing the diverse influences that have shaped Bouchkov's own distinctive musical voice.

Marc Bouchkov
Belgian violinist of Russian-Ukrainian heritage, Marc Bouchkov is a sophisticated artist blending research and study with highly emotional musical input in his performances.

Highlights of the 2025/26 season include his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto under Louis Langrée, as well as a series of recitals with Mikhail Pletnev in Madrid, Barcelona and Salzburg. On 6 November 2026, Bouchkov will release his new album, From the Beginning, on Orchid Classics. The album brings together violin miniatures associated with and arranged by Jascha Heifetz alongside Bouchkov's own compositions, reflecting both the violinistic tradition that has shaped him and his own creative voice as a composer.

Deutsche Grammophon Gold has published his live performances of Ysaÿe sonatas and concerto from the Verbier Festival. He also recorded an all-Mendelssohn album with pianist Claire Huang-Ci for Berlin Classics. His first album on Harmonia Mundi featured two premieres by Eugène Ysaÿe and two works composed by Bouchkov himself, and was awarded a Diapason d'Or and a Diapason Découverte. A close collaborator of living composers, he has also recorded chamber music by Igor Raykhelson and two violin concertos by Alexey Shor.

He has performed Brahms' Double Concerto with cellist Mischa Maisky under Christoph Eschenbach, and the complete cycle of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas with Mao Fujita at the Verbier Festival, Oji Hall in Tokyo and the Israel Philharmonic Hall.

His chamber music partners have included Evgeny Kissin, Mischa Maisky, Sir András Schiff, Lahav Shani, Klaus Mäkelä and Behzod Abduraimov.

His competition prizes include the gold medal at the Montreal International Musical Competition and the silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

Marc Bouchkov was born into a family of violinists. He received his first lessons at the age of five from his grandfather, followed by studies with Claire Bernard and Boris Garlitsky. He later studied with Mihaela Martin as a Young Soloist in the postgraduate programme at the Kronberg Academy, and has for many years been under the musical tutorship of Eduard Wulfson.
