Info for Emmerich Kálmán Die Csárdásfürstin (The Gypsy Princess)
Emmerich Kálmán, along with Franz Lehár was one of the supreme operetta composers of the twentieth century. His unique fusion of Hungarian and Viennese dance rhythms, his gift for memorable melodies and his natural feeling for glamour and romance have kept his major works on the stage constantly since they first appeared.
Conductor Richard Bonynge’s conception of this repertoire is second to none; and in this recording he truly surpasses himself; while Yvonne Kenny’s naturally radiant voice is perfectly suited to the role of the young gypsy who falls in love with the Prince.
The Gypsy Princess was Emmerich Kálmán greatest success, a work written in 1915 and describing a world that within a few years would be obliterated by the First World War. It tells of events around the Orpheum Cabaret Theatre and the complicated love-life of Sylva Varescu, the star of the theatre. The music is delightful, Bonynge is in his element and Yvonne Kenny is superb in the title-role.
„Die Csárdáfürstin tells an improbable tale of the mismatch between a showgirl, Sylva, and an aristocrat, Prince Edwin. Richard Bonynge conducts a lively, beautifully sprung performance, made the more idiomatic by using an East European orchestra. Yvonne Kenny as Sylva gives a characterful, idiomatic performance, well supported by singers very much in the operetta tradition, and by Michael Roider as Edwin and Mojca Erdmann and Marko Kathol as the second couple. Well produced, the numbers are introduced by a sprinkling of dialogue. The first-rate sound brings out the beauty of Kálmán’s orchestration.“ (The Penguin Guide)
“The English title of Kálmán's most celebrated operetta is a misnomer. The heroine is a princess not of gypsies but (as the German title, DieCsárdásfürstin, indicates) of the csárdás; she's a Budapest cabaret-singer in love with a young aristocrat. Its score shows Kálmán at his most fluent, with a succession of gloriously tuneful hit numbers that mix spicy Hungarian rhythms with the more graceful strains of the Viennese waltz.
Individual numbers have often been committed to disc, but complete recordings have been much less frequent. Yet to appreciate the overall structure of Kálmán's operetta scores you really need to hear his elaborately constructed act finales, in which musical reprises are interspersed with passages of dialogue and melodrama.
Apart from sensibly reducing the opening orchestral flourishes from three to one, Bonynge typically gives us total fidelity to what Kálmán actually wrote. He brings out to the full Kálmán's highly charged rhythms, every detail of the exotic orchestration, and the contrasts of mood between the fiery big numbers and the moments of melancholy and sadness in the Acts 1 and 2 finales. Among a wholly admirable cast, Yvonne Kenny provides the vocal strength, fire and beauty required by the title role.” (Gramophone Magazine)
