German instrumental rock powerhouse Long Distance Calling have announced the release of their sixth studio album ‘Boundless’ for 2nd February 2018. Following the release of two albums that saw the band exploring the addition of vocals to their sound, the band have gone back to basics and created a purely instrumental record.

The band comments: “We are happy to announce our new album "Boundless" which will see the light of day on February 2nd 2018. This time around the four of us locked ourselves in a room over a couple of months and pretty much got back to where we started as a band to catch this “go with the flow” feeling. This is probably the purest LDC album ever, no guests, no vocals, all instrumental. We´re stoked how it turned out and this album got a lot of energy, heaviness, melodies and twists, we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.”

Following the release of 2016’s TRIPS, which saw the band collaborating with Norwegian vocalist Petter Carlsen, Long Distance Calling celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut album ‘Satellite Bay’ with ‘An Evening With’ shows in Germany. This was the first step in the band for returning to a solely instrumental sound, going back to the core of what the band are about and realising that the band were happiest with just the 4 of them together.

The band reveals: “We wanted to focus on what we started with. Maybe that’s why Boundless turned out so hard – we all started with metal back in the days.” If ‘Boundless’ sounds like anyone at all, it’s Long Distance Calling. Four musicians, four totally different but strong characters. The band adds: “This time we worked very intuitively. Someone starts, and something develops from this. This way, you achieve an enormous sonic scope – and you can hear that on the album.”

Long Distance Calling tear everything down and let it blossom again. ‘Boundless’ sounds like freedom found again, sometimes weightless, sometimes oppressively heavy.

Rückbesinnung auf instrumentale Kernkompetenz in Vierer-Besetzung: Münsteraner Post-Rock Band gelingt auf sechstem Album ›Boundless‹ ein musikalischer Befreiungsschlag! Enormer Zugewinn an Dynamik, Emotionalität und stilistischer Bandbreite.

Auf die beiden höchst erfolgreichen Alben ›The Flood Inside‹ von 2013 und ›Trips‹ von 2016, die zum überwiegenden Teil Songs mit Gesang enthielten, folgte 2017 eine Tournee zum zehnten Jubiläum des Debutalbums ›Satellite Bay‹, die die Band mit dem rein instrumentalen Sound der Anfangstage konfrontierte.

Dies hat bandintern offenbar zu einem kollektiven ›Eureka‹ Moment geführt, was die Herangehensweise an das sechste Album ›Boundless‹ betrifft – denn hierauf kehrt die Band zurück zum reinen Instrumentalsound ihrer Anfangstage. Die Erkenntnis, dass aus dem intuitiven Zusammenspiel der vier starken und komplett unterschiedlichen Charaktere die einzigartige Dynamik und Energie entsteht, die Essenz der Band ausmacht, hat Long Distance Calling darin bestärkt, sich wieder komplett auf die musikalische Interaktion untereinander zu verlassen. Eine goldrichtige Idee, die sich auf ›Boundless‹ mehr als auszahlt.

So emotional und vielschichtig hat man die Band noch nie gehört: Die bisher härtesten Riffs der Bandgeschichte treffen auf fein austarierte perkussive Elemente aus Beats und Loops, die nicht zufällig an die Hochzeiten des Krautrock oder frühem Elektro erinnern, tosende Lärmwände lösen sich in melancholischen Indie- Melodien auf oder kreieren einen beschwingten Spaghetti-Western-Vibe, um noch mächtiger als zuvor zurückzukehren – und alles fließt im typischen Groove der Band ganz hervorragend ineinander.

Wer nun denkt, dass Long Distance Calling ihren Sound sehr akribisch seziert hätten, um ihn nach eingehender Analyse wieder minutiös zusammenzufügen, irrt gewalting, denn unter der Oberfläche der Songs brodelt viel Chaos. Chaos deshalb, weil die Band eben genau jedes Kalkül außer acht lässt und sich umso mehr auf ihr blind vertrautes Zusammenspiel verlassen kann – und genau deshalb funktioniert ›Boundless‹ so herausragend.

Auf ihrem sechsten Album haben Long Distance Calling alles bisherige eingrissen und sich neu erfunden – deshalb schwebt und flirrt ›Boundless‹ so grandios zwischen schwerelos und erdrückend mächtig. Die musikalische Wiedergeburt einer deutschen Band von Weltformat.
