Mystical tales, legendary figures, elves, demons, fabulous characters... All compositions of this recording have one thing in common: the supernatural. To trace the underlying legends, stories and mythologies means to give expression to the different character traits and possible ambivalences of the figures with musical means. Thus an elf has a rather light, floating and elegant character, demons can be wild, unpredictable and impetuous, ghosts appear gloomy, cold and lightless, mermaids on the other hand sweet, melancholic and beguiling. The aim of the interpretation is to fill this immensely exciting creative space. Lilja Steininger (flute) plays together with Erika le Roux (piano) works by Friedrich Kuhlau, François Borne, Brett Dean, Carl Reinecke and Philipp Taffanel.

Lilja Steininger
wurde 1994 als Kind zweier Musiker in Berlin geboren. In ihrer Jugend erzielte sie in sechs aufeinanderfolgenden Jahren jeweils einen 1. Preis auf Bundesebene beim Wettbewerb ‘Jugend musiziert’. Bereits mit 14 Jahren debütierte sie in der Reihe ‘Solo für junge Preisträger’ als Solistin mit dem Deutschen Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Im selben Jahr absolvierte Lilja Steininger erfolgreich die Aufnahmeprüfung für das Julius-Stern-Institut an der Universität der Künste in Berlin, wo sie bis 2012 als Jungstudentin in der Flötenklasse von Christiane Hellmann und Prof. Roswitha Staege studierte. Anschließend nahm sie ihr Studium an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien in der Flötenklassen von Prof. Hansgeorg Schmeiser auf. Mit 20 Jahren wurde Lilja Steininger Akademistin der Karajan-Akademie der Berliner Philharmoniker. Dort wirkte sie an zahlreichen Proben und Konzerten mit, nahm an Festspielen und Tourneen teil und konzertierte solistisch und kammermusikalisch in Konzerten der Orchesterakademie.

Mit ihrer Schwester, der Pianistin Aniele Steininger gründete sie 2010 das Steininger-Duo. Seitdem konzertieren sie regelmäßig in Österreich, Deutschland und der Schweiz. 2018 gewannen sie den Sonderpreis ‘Bestes Duo’ im internationalen ‘Anton Rubinstein Kammermusikwettbewerb’. Lilja Steininger ist Preisträgerin zahlreicher internationaler Wettbewerbe, u.a. gewann sie den 1. Preis bei der ‘Osaka International Music Competition’ in Japan oder den 3. Preis bei der ‘UNISA Flute and Clarinet Competition’ in Pretoria (Südafrika). Sie war außerdem Stipendiatin der ‘Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben’, der ‘Peters-Beer- Stiftung’, sowie der ‘Richard-Wagner-Stipendienstiftung’. Von 2015 bis 2019 wirkte sie als Soloflötistin bei Projekten der Russisch-Deutschen- Musikakademie unter der Leitung von Valery Gergiev mit. Lilja Steininger spielte Solokonzerte mit namenhaften Orchestern, u.a. dem Tonkünstler- Orchester Niederosterreich, dem Deutschen Symphonie-Orchester Berlin oder der Baltischen Philharmonie Danzig. Mit dem Orchester Berliner Musikfreunde gab sie 2015 ihr Debüt im großen Saal der Berliner Philharmonie. Seit 2019 ist Lilja Steininger Soloflötistin der Düsseldorfer Symphoniker.

Seit Wintersemester 21/22 unterrichtet Lilja Steininger das Fach Flöte an der Internationalen Musikakademie Anton Rubinstein in Düsseldorf.

Erika Le Roux
was born into an artistic family in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her first piano teacher was Barbara van Wijk, a teacher who laid a magnificent foundation for the pursuit of musicianship in many young people in her time.

Erika le Roux subsequently continued her studies under the guidance of Dr. Adolph Hallis, a British – South African pianist and fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London. Adolph Hallis installed a love for the subtleties of sound and texture in accordance with the performance practise of the late romantic and classical modern composers and pianists in his students. This accordingly inspired Erika le Roux to subscribe to the love of playing piano works on older instruments, built around the turn of the 20th century, whenever possible.

Two more significant teachers completed her South African education: the Ukrainian – born Sophia Moshevich and Pauline Nossel, both teachers at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, both of whom contributed significant technical and musical aspects to her pianistic development.

From an early age, Erika le Roux exhibited a great love for chamber music in many different constellations, parallel to her course as a piano soloist. She also developed a great skill as piano accompanist for many different styles of lieder. Accordingly, she developed a prodigious, steadily expanding repertoire of piano music.

She was awarded many prizes at national and international competitions, including the Pretoria, Montevideo and UNESCO international competitions.

After completing her studies in South Africa, Erika le Roux emigrated to Germany, where she has been living and working ever since. Her work in Germany is manifold – drawing on skills learnt as solo pianist, sonata partner, chamber musician and lied accompanist, she covers an extensive kaleidoscope of work.

Erika le Roux has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras in Germany and South Africa, and appeared in international music festivals, such as the Rheingau and Schleswig – Holstein festivals. She travels extensively as working pianist, and continually expands her field of work.

She started two concert series, which have been running for numerous years now – one in Wiesbaden, and one in Landau in der Pfalz. Both of these series enjoy a definite renommee in these cities.
