Info for Clara et Robert Schumann - musique de chambre pour cor
For his latest ATMA Classique recording, horn player Louis-Philippe Marsolais has chosen a selection of chamber music by Clara and Robert Schumann composed for various instruments, some of which have been transcribed for horn. He is joined by pianists Philip Chiu and David Jalbert, and cellists Stéphane Tétreault and Cameron Crozman.
“The Op. 70, 73, and 94 presented on this album are integral parts of Robert Schumann’s most fertile years” says Marsolais. “The freer forms adopted for these compositions and their less conventional instrumentation led to being categorized as Hausmusik (“domestic music”, often intended for amateur musicians), which explains the lack of enthusiasm they initially aroused. They are now recognized as authentic masterpieces and are included in the repertoire of many instruments.”

Louis-Philippe Marsolais
One of Canada’s most active horn soloists, Montréal-based Louis-Philippe Marsolais has been making a name for himself on the international scene for over 20 years. He shares his musical life between solo performance, chamber music and orchestral playing. His career took a giant leap in 2005 when he took home three prizes at the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich. These awards are in addition to the long list of prizes he has won in other international competitions, including Geneva, Rovereto and Trévoux. Since then, he has performed with many orchestras in Canada and has toured in the United States and throughout Europe. Marsolais has served as principal horn with Orchestre Métropolitain since 2009 and is a frequent collaborator with Les Violons du Roy and the I Musici de Montréal chamber orchestra. He is also a highly active chamber musician. As a member of the Pentaèdre wind quintet since 2003, he has performed throughout Canada as well as in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. His numerous solo, chamber music and orchestral recordings, mostly on the ATMA Classique label, have all received unanimous praise as well as many awards. In 2018, his album featuring Mozart’s horn concertos received an Opus Prize for “Album of the Year – Romantic, Post-Romantic and Impressionist Music” awarded by the Conseil québécois de la musique. As a curious musician, he explores all musical eras. His expertise on the baroque and natural horns has brought him to the stage with various early music groups, and his virtuosity on the modern instrument has inspired many composers to write works which he has premiered. Louis-Philippe Marsolais is Associate Professor (horn) at the University of Montréal Music Faculty and also teaches at the Domaine Forget Summer Academy. He was a member of the Advisory Council of the International Horn Society from 2015 to 2020, and has been President of the Quebec horn association since its foundation in 2013.
