Info for Bartholomée: Œdipe sur la route
On the booklet by Henri Bauchau of his famous novel "Œdipe sur la Route”, Pierre Bartholomée composed an opera with a disturbing beauty. General audience and large theater with a unique distribution.”Œdipe sur la route” was premiered in March 2003 at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels. Bernard Foccroulle, who had commissioned it, entrusted the staging to Philippe Sireuil and the musical direction to Daniele Callegari, with stage design by Vincent Lemaire. José Van Dam, at the centre of a large cast, radiated presence and vocal splendour. The present recording was made at La Monnaie, for Belgian television, at the opera’s last performance. Being the audio transcription of a live video recording, one will perceive the shivering of the stage here and there, and the time sequence is modulated by the acting. Œdipe sur la route calls for considerable musical and stage forces: a symphony orchestra, a chorus (generally invisible), 12 solo singers, two silent actors and a few extras. Bauchau’s novel had moved Pierre Bartholomée deeply. The music that he composed owes everything to it. It is almost as if it had been dictated to him. His movement, advance, colours, and progression are borne by ‘Oedipus’s step’, his wandering, his powerful, delirious voice. But, embedded in the orchestra’s multiple polyphonies, biting or meditative, often rough and frothing, there is also Antigone’s voice in revolt, along with those, sometimes barely audible, of a distant chorus, a Clios at the limits of the cry or even the gently solemn, refreshing voice of Diotima.
