Info for New Brandenburg Concertos (Organ Trio Sonatas Expanded)
What if Bach had composed another set of Brandenburg Concertos – based on his own organ music? That’s the question Concerto Copenhagen seeks to answer in their forthcoming album, New Brandenburg Concertos, in which the ensemble embarks on what they describe as “historically informed fiction.”
In close collaboration with the other musicians, Concerto Copenhagen’s oboist Antoine Torunczyk has orchestrated Bach’s six Organ Trio Sonatas (BWV 525–530) into six new concertos. These are inspired by the imaginative instrumentation and virtuosity of Bach’s original Brandenburg Concertos, and richly coloured with Baroque instruments such as the three kinds of oboes (oboe, oboe d’amore, oboe da caccia), and the three kinds of violas : viola da braccio, viola d’amore, viola pomposa.
Following the example set by Bach himself—who never hesitated to transform, for instance, a prelude for solo violin into a sinfonia for grand organ and orchestra with strings, oboes, trumpets, and timpani—this album presents an expanded version of the Organ Trio Sonatas: six new “Concertos for Several Instruments,” echoing the original French title Concerts avec plusieurs instruments that Bach gave to the equally famous Brandenburg Concertos.
The result is a work of fiction—far from any claim to authenticity, a concept usually central to an historically informed ensemble such as Concerto Copenhagen.
But, as Antoine Torunczyk puts it: “I have come up with an attempt at ‘Historically Informed Fiction’ (..) At the end of the journey, the music seems unquestionably transformed, yet strangely familiar – like meeting an old friend after many years. My only wish is that the listener will take as much pleasure in rediscovering these pieces in a new light as I have enjoyed spending these years in their company.”
For more than 30 years, Concerto Copenhagen has explored and performed the music of the Baroque, Viennese Classicism and early Romantic periods with historical awareness and artistic intransigence, and the orchestra today stands as an international beacon in its field. Musical director Lars Ulrik Mortensen and Concerto Copenhagen unite artistic authenticity and innovation and, through original interpretations, give the music new life and relevance for a modern audience. Concerto Copenhagen's musicians belong to the international elite of Baroque musicians, and since the first concerts in 1991, the orchestra has been on an exciting artistic and musical journey - appreciated and praised by audiences and critics worldwide. With a repertoire that combines well-known European music with lesser-known works of Scandinavian origin as well as new music, the orchestra marked its 30th anniversary in 2021, and was subsequently named P2 Artist of the Year 2022.

Original interpretations and a strong ability to communicate with the audience are among Concerto Copenhagen’s hallmarks – making old music vital, relevant and contemporary.
In 1999 the internationally acclaimed harpsichordist and chamber musician, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, became the ensemble’s chief artistic director, and was awarded the coveted Léonie Sonning Music Prize in 2007.
Scandinavian origins: The collaboration between Concerto Copenhagen and Lars Ulrik Mortensen has led to an exciting artistic and musical journey, appreciated and praised by audiences and critics worldwide, and combining a repertoire of well-known European music with less familiar works of Scandinavian origin.
Over the years Concerto Copenhagen has collaborated with many internationally renowned artists in the Early Music scene, including Emma Kirkby, Andreas Scholl, Anne Sofie von Otter, Sonia Prina, Vivica Genaux, Andrew Manze, Andrew Lawrence-King, Reinhard Goebel, Ronald Brautigam, Jordi Savall, and Alfredo Bernardini, the orchestra’s principal guest conductor. Beginning in 2015 the Danish composer Karl Aage Rasmussen will be composer-in-residence and accompany the orchestra on an adventurous expedition into the world of contemporary music.
International attention: Concerto Copenhagen’s CD recordings for CPO, Deutsche Grammophon and BIS, as well as DVD productions for Harmonia Mundi and Decca have attracted worldwide attention and won several international awards. This has led to invitations from many of Europe’s leading concert venues and festivals, as well as extensive tours to the USA, Japan, Brazil, Mexico and Australia. International reviews reflect the experience of a cosmopolitan orchestra at the highest level.
Concerto Copenhagen’s collaboration with Italian opera director Deda Cristina Colonna has led to highly successful opera productions in the orchestra’s hometown Copenhagen. In 2016 Concerto Copenhagen will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a wide range of projects and events.
