Info for Alleluia
The vocal sensation everyone’s talking about – Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva – makes her Decca solo debut with a celebratory album of motets from Vivaldi, Handel, Porpora and Mozart, partnered by one of the world’s leading early music ensembles, Il Giardino Armonico, conducted by Giovanni Antonini.
Praised for her “pure tone” (Opernwelt) and “flawless technique” (Guardian), Lezhneva’s career has skyrocketed since her brief but extraordinary appearance at the 2010 Classical BRIT Awards in London, at the invitation of her mentor, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. “Few young singers have been as widely celebrated so early in their careers as Kiri Te Kanawa’s protegé, the . . . Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva”, wrote The Independent. Dame Kiri recently added her voice to the critical consensus, observing that “from time time to time a really outstanding talent appears and I believe that Julia Lezhneva is just that. The brilliance of her voice and technique are extremely impressive.”
Invitations to perform and record have come to Lezhneva from all corners, resulting in a large following. Her solo Rossini album charted in many European countries; it landed at #1 in the French Classical Charts and won the soprano the 2012 Diapason d’or Award for “Young Talent”, Gramophone’s “Editor’s Choice” and the German MDR “CD of the Year”. “A new star is born”, hailed Die Welt and The Sunday Times stated: “Clearly a name to watch . . .” The repertoire on Lezhneva’s debut solo album for Decca Classics includes motets by Vivaldi, Handel, Porpora and Mozart, which she will tour in the spring of 2013 with her partners on this disc, Il Giardino Armonico and Giovanni Antonini. The repertoire – four virtuosic motets each concluding with an “Alleluia” – provide an ideal showcase for her vocal agility and her power to move the listener with the purity of her tone. While Vivaldi, Handel and Mozart are well-known, Porpora’s motet is a world premiere recording. The 23-year-old soprano explains that she wanted to wait to record opera arias until she has had more stage experience with them; meanwhile, “Porpora’s vocal lines are completely natural and very comfortable for my voice, even though they are written in an instrumental way”, and Lezhneva adds, “Porpora’s music fits my voice like Chopin fits a pianist’s hands. Its joy is phenomenal – it’s a tonic to sing this music.”
'Clearly a name to watch…The ingredients for a great career certainly are there.' (The Sunday Times)
'An exacting, complex role, [Caio] was sung unforgettably in this concert performance by Julia Lezhneva, who combines flawless technique with emotional veracity.' (The Guardian)
