Info for Jazz Piano Classics – The Way You Look Tonight, Satin Doll & Timeless Jazz Standards (Remastered)
Don Shirley combined classical, jazz, and spiritual influences on the many recordings he released in the 1950s and 60s, making him a pianist beyond easy definition. A forgotten figure in recent years, he‘s come back into the limelight as a result of the Oscar-winning movie Green Book. On this edition of Night Lights we‘ll hear some of his recordings, including an early 1960s hit, some standards as well as his own compositions, and a 1955 concert collaboration with Duke Ellington, and we'll learn more about his background and career.
"The black experience through music, with a sense of dignity, that’s all I have ever tried to do” - Dr. Don Shirley, in an interview with The New York Times in 1982.
“His virtuosity is worthy of the Gods” - Igor Stravinsky
