Info for ARE WE GONNA SING?
The album is a 12-track collection and represents his most honest and personal work to date. It was created alongside close friends and collaborators in his hometown of Eastbourne, UK, and produced in collaboration with Manta, Humble the Great, HARGS and Mac Jamieson. It captures the spirit of the people and places that have shaped Sam’s life journey.
The entire album *Are We Gonna Sing?* was created using this more instinctive approach. Sam Tompkins’ new collaboration with producer Humble The Great fuelled his motivation to use mainly real instruments, to jam and to capture emotions as directly as possible.
And there were certainly plenty of powerful emotions to capture: in 2023, Sam Tompkins’ father passed away. This initially plunged the musician into an existential crisis about what his current career and art actually meant to him. In search of a fresh start, Tompkins recalled a question his father had asked in an old home video: Are We Gonna Sing? “For me, this question is incredibly moving now, because my most important source of inspiration – the person I most wanted to impress – is no longer here,” explains Sam Tompkins.
He goes on to say: “It’s an album about grief and everything that comes with it: the good, the bad and the ugly. When I started working on it, I thought it would have to revolve entirely around my father – but that wasn’t the case. It had to be about where I was in my life at that moment, and about being absolutely honest. Sometimes you’re angry, sometimes happy, sometimes you feel guilty for being happy – which then makes you angry all over again. It’s a constant cycle of emotions, and this album is a snapshot from the time when I was right in the middle of that process. I hope that everyone who listens to it takes something away from it.”
