Rediscovered in the 80ies, Jean Cras (1879-1932) is now recognized as one of the most important French composers of his time.Among his numerous works chamber music is probably the main genre of his production, like in the works here recorded. After listening his quartet, Maurice Ravel wrote him 'You know how much I love your music...'

The French pianist, Jean-Pierre Ferey, began studying piano at age 6 at the Conservatoire of Le Mans, and won prizes in piano and chamber music at the age of 15 and 16. Then he posed the problem of orientation, and ambient pressure, completely abandoning the piano, and spending his leisure in sport rather than music. He attended classes in composition, harmony and counterpoint at the Conservatoire of Creteil. After studied of civilian engineering with option geology, he joined as a researcher in a small geothermal engineering company. Thanks to a favourable combination of circumstances this was a half-time job. He was able to resume his piano studies with Lelia Gousseau, Professor at the Paris Conservatoire and the École Normale de Musique. In December 1983, he took a vacation to participate in the Competition of Zaragoza - three weeks of preparation and two weeks of competition - where he won the 4th prize in competition with "full time" pianists. Less than a year later, he terminated his activity as an engineer, whereas he could now make a serious progress by taking the risk of dedicating himself completely to music. "If I had not done," he said, I would have regretted it my whole life. "

Since then, he has become a full time concert pianist, with a slow start in the first year and getting better over the years. He is often the producer of his concerts, renting the hall and paying the ticket prices. His repertoire is extensive, his palette very broad and the concerts he gives covers works from Haydn to Henri Dutilleux. He has recorded works by such diverse composers as Samuel Barber, Léon Boëllmann, Jean Cras, Marcel Dupré, Gabriel Fauré, César Franck, Eugene Gigout, Paul Ladmirault, Jean Langlais, Frederic Ledroit, Aubert Lemeland, Gian-Francesco Malipiero, Flor Peeters, Maurice Ravel and Charles-Marie Widor, on labels as Cybelia and Skarbo.

Quatuor Sine Qua Non
The Sine Qua Non Quartet was created in 2006 by graduates of the national conservatories and music schools of Paris and Lyon. Their careers and diverse sensitivities - Baroque, contemporary music, French chanson, world music, pedagogical research - are so many riches that merge in the Quartet and make for a multi-facetted ensemble. Very quickly, they were invited to play in prestigious venues (Olympia, Théâtre Mogador, UNESCO and Cité de la Musique in Paris, Château de Fontainebleau, Théâtre Impérial in Compiègne, Théâtre Sébastopol in Lille), abroad (Cameroon, United Arab Emirates, Morocco, South America), and in festivals.

The Quartet is always seeking to broaden its horizons and thus performs with artists as different as the guitarist Olivier Pelmoine, the Arte Combo wind quintet, the haute-contre Fabrice Di Falco, the pop singer Marc Perrone, and many others. They have created numerous original shows, including in 2008 L'Assassinat du duc de Guise after the André Calmettes film, and also a Bang and Olufsen show, using high technology. Then Les 8 saisons by Antonio Vivaldi and Astor Piazzolla in 2009, L'Amour sorcier in 2010... Since 2012, they have showcased women composers with their repertoires of quartets, so little known by the general public. They also take part to chamber music masterclasses as well as performances in educational centers and prison environments, particularly in 2015 and 2016 during the festivals 'Musiciennes en Guadeloupe' and 'Musiciennes en Martinique'. In 2018 the Quatuor Sine Qua Non released its first album which was devoted to the French composer Jean Cras (1879-1932). They recorded his quartet and quintet with pianist Jean-Pierre Ferey, praised by the musical press in many different countries (Skarbo DSK4181).
