Info zu Violonchelo Espanol

Spain has long been known as an alluring land of passionate spirits, flamboyant dance rhythms, dazzling colors and an aura all its own, slightly tinged with exoticism. For much of its history, Spain has also been a center of artistic and scientific life, attracting scholars, painters and musicians from all over Europe. It has nurtured a long and distinguished tradition of music that goes as far back as the twelfth century, when the monastery at Santiago de Compostela, located in the Pyrenees, vied with St. Martial (in Limoges) as one of Europe’s most important centers of polyphonic music. Spain’s “Golden Age” of Music was the sixteenth century, when composers like Cristóbal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, Tomás Luis de Victoria and Antonio Cabezón held sway.

Music continued to be important throughout the following centuries, but, as in England, creative activity tended to center around musicians from abroad (Domenico Scarlatti and Luigi Boccherini spring immediately to mind). That changed with the arrival on the scene of Felipe Pedrell (1841-1922) – composer, founder of modern Spanish music and Spain’s first modern musicologist. Pedrell imparted to his students a patriotic awareness of their country’s rich musical heritage, encouraging them to blend classical and folkloric elements. His three most famous pupils are all represented on this album.

I Musici de Montréal
Yuli Turovsky, cello

The Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal
is an award-winning 15-piece chamber orchestra whose vast repertoire ranges from baroque music to contemporary music. Founded in 1983 by cellist and conductor Yuli Turovsky, who served as its conductor until May 2011, I Musici de Montréal’s exceptional quality quickly drew recognition: As early as 1987 the ensemble was named “Chamber Orchestra of the Year” by the Canadian Music Council, and I Musici has since earned a distinguished reputation abroad. The ensemble has toured extensively in the last 27 years, giving audiences from 23 countries a chance to fully appreciate the virtuosity and exceptional cohesion of its outstanding musicians. I Musici de Montréal and maestro Yuli Turovsky have released more than 40 recordings, many of which have earned awards and distinctions both at home and on the international stage.

The Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls. As well as earn a loyal public following, I Musici de Montréal has garnered widespread critical praise for its precision, virtuosity and high level of excellence – the hallmarks of the orchestra’s style. These qualities have served to confirm the orchestra’s distinguished position on both the national and international stages.

In June 2011, conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni was appointed principal conductor and artistic director designate of I Musici de Montréal. Hailed as one of the most brilliant young orchestra conductors in Canada for his expressive and convincing style, Jean-Marie Zeitouni graduated from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in conducting, percussion and composition. In addition to his responsibilities with I Musici, Zeitouni is musical director of the Columbus Symphony (Ohio) and first guest conductor of the Violons du Roy, an ensemble with which he has given more than 200 concerts in North America over the last 10 years.

Jean-Marie Zeitouni has emerged as one of Canada’s brightest young conductors. His eloquent yet fiery style, in repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary music, results in regular re-engagements across North America. He studied with Maestro Raffi Armenian and graduated from the Montréal Conservatory in conducting, percussion, and theory. In addition to his new responsibilities as Artistic Director Designate and Conductor of Orchestre de chambre I Musici de Montréal, Mr. Zeitouni is Music Director of the Columbus Symphony in Ohio. He also is Principal Guest Conductor of Les Violons du Roy until the end of the 2011-2012 season.

Yuli Turovsky
Born in Moscow, Yuli Turovsky’s musical awakening began early on. By the age of 7, he was seriously invested in the study of the cello. He entered the celebrated Tchaikovsky Conservatory where he had the honor to study with the celebrated Galina Kozulupova and in 1969 received First Prize in the USSR Cello Competition. The following year he was among the laureates of the 22nd Prague Spring International Competition. His studies completed, he began the first of many tours around the world as a member of the celebrated Moscow Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Rudolph Barchai.

After immigrating to Canada and establishing himself in Montreal, Yuli Turovsky carried on his brilliant musical career as a soloist, as a member of the Turovsky Duo with his wife Eleonora and as a founding member of the Borodine Trio. Created in 1977, he remained with his trio until 1993.

The quality of his performances have made him an audience favourite. The symphony orchestras of Detroit, Montreal, Chicago, Athens, Jerusalem and Stockholm have welcomed him as a soloist and he continues to be a recording artist, counting more than 80 CDs.

In spite of his formidable schedule, Yuli Turovsky continues to teach at the Faculté de musique of l’Université de Montréal where he has formed a generation of cellists. 2002 marked the 25th anniversary of musical life for Yuli Turovsky in Canada: a quarter of a century of remarkable creativity that constitutes a special heritage and a unique source of inspiration.
