Info zu Live at Museo Piaggio

This album is part of the recordings I made on the occasion of the concerts of the 1st edition of the fonè Music Festival Piaggio 2019. The concerts organized by Giulio Cesare Ricci were held at the Piaggio Auditorium located inside the famous Museum in Pontedera, the place where Piaggio was born and where it still continues to produce today.

Inside the Museum every year the public from all over the world can admire the Piaggio production made over the years, all the models of the Vespe and Ape, all the Aprilia, Gilera and Moto Guzzi motorcycles that have won national and international awards over time.

For each recording Giulio Cesare Ricci brought all his equipment both analog (Ampex ATR 102 Electronic Tube Ampex Model 351-1965, 2 tracks, 1/2 inch, 30ips modified by David Manley) and digital (Pyramix Recorder, dCS A/D and D/A converters).

As for the microphones he used his original collection of Neumann U47, U48, M49 in addition to the mike pre-amplifier and Signoricci cables.

Also for this recording he used a "field effect" recording technique, natural sound, without the use of equalizers, no sound expansion and compression systems..... all this to bring the listener to live again in his home hifi system, the live effect as if he were present at the concert.

The protagonists of this album are Scott Hamilton saxophone, Paolo Birro piano, Aldo Zunino bass and Alfred Kramer drums.

Scott Hamilton, considered to be one of the greatest mainstream saxophonists, has realized many albums with fonè appreciated by the public all over the world ... all recorded in a place with natural acoustics but without the presence of the public.

In this case, however, it is the first live recording with the great American saxophonist in the company of three great jazz musicians Paolo Birro, Aldo Zunino and Alfred Kramer, his usual partners when he performs in Italy.

Great realism, great dynamics, great music ... an album not to be missed !!

Each listener, closing his eyes, will be able to relive the emotion of the live as if he were present at the performance of these four great artists.

Scott Hamilton
was born in 1954, in Providence, Rhode Island. During his early childhood he heard a lot of jazz through his father’s extensive record collection, and became acquainted with the jazz greats. He tried out several instruments, including drums at about the age of five, piano at six and mouth-organ. He had some clarinet lessons when he was about eight years of age, but that was the only formal music tuition he has ever had. Even at that age he was attracted to the sound of Johnny Hodges, but it was not until he was about sixteen that he started playing the saxophone seriously. From his playing mainly blues on mouth organ, his little band gradually became more of a jazz band. He moved to New York in 1976 at the age of twenty-two, and through Roy Eldridge, with whom he had played a year previously in Boston, got a six-week gig at Michael’s Pub. Roy also paved the way for him to work with Anita O’Day and Hank Jones. Although it was the tail-end of the of old New York scene, a lot of the greats were still playing and he got to work and learn from people like Eldridge, Illinois Jacquet, Vic Dickenson and Jo Jones. Eldridge was Scott’s champion, but pulled no punches, and could be extremely critical, something for which Scott has always been grateful. In December of the same year John Bunch got Scott his first recording date, for Famous Door, and was also responsible for him joining Benny Goodman. He continued to work with Goodman at different times until the early 1980s. In 1977 he formed his own quartet, which later became a quintet, with Bunch added to the group. The same year Carl Jefferson heard him, and began recording him for his Concord record label. More than forty albums later he is still recording for them, having made many under his own leadership, several with his regular British quartet of John Pearce, Dave Green and Steve Brown, including his latest, Nocturnes & Serenades. The Quartet plus two guests, Dave Cliff and Mark Nightingale recorded Our Delight! for Alan Barnes’ Woodville label. A new release, Across the Tracks on Concorde is due this May. Along the way he has made albums with Dave McKenna, Jake Hanna, Woody Herman, Tony Bennett, Gerry Mulligan, Flip Phillips, Maxine Sullivan, Buddy Tate, Warren Vache, many with Rosemary Clooney and a number with another of his mentors, Ruby Braff, with whom he played residencies at the Pizza Express Jazz Club, London in the mid-1980s. Over the years Scott has also performed and recorded with such touring bands as the Concord Jazz All Stars, the Concord Super Band and George Wein’s Newport Jazz Festival All Stars.

For some years he was based in London, where he first played in 1978, but now travels the world from Italy. Each year, in addition to two or three residencies with the quartet at the Pizza Express Jazz Club, British jazz club dates and festival work including Brecon, where he is one of the patrons, he regularly tours Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Japan, Spain and Italy. He returns to America three or four times a year to play at festivals, including in 2007, the New York JVC festival in June and Irvine, California in September, and in February 2008 for three nights at the Lincoln Centre New York.

His playing has best been described by fellow tenor saxophonist and writer, Dave Gelly: “Following a Scott Hamilton solo is like listening to a great conversationalist in full flow. First comes the voice, the inimitable, assured sound of his tenor saxophone, then the informal style and finally the amazing fluency and eloquent command of the jazz language.” Scott was awarded the ‘Ronnie’ for International Jazz Saxophonist of the Year in the 2007 inaugural Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Awards. It is no wonder that Scott Hamilton is in demand the world over. (Brian Peerless)

Paolo Birro
was born in Noventa Vicentina, Vicenza, Italy in 1962. He completed his classical piano studies at the Vicenza Conservatory with a summa cum laude degree in 1987, afterwhich he devoted himself to the jazz language which had fascinated him from his childhood. In 1992, in trio with Sandro Gibellini e Mauro Negri, he won the first prize for the performing group section at the Barga Jazz International Contest. In 1996, after the releasing of his first trio album “Fair Play”, he was nominated “Best New Talent” by the critics of the magazine “Musica Jazz." His career has offered him the opportunity to perform with jazz legends such as Lee Konitz, Buddy De Franco, Art Farmer, Johnny Griffin and many other internationally-known artists including Scott Hamilton, Gianni Basso, Ruud Brink, Eliot Zigmund, Bobby Watson, Ronnie Cuber, Harry Allen, Tom Kirkpatrick, Charles Davis, Enrico Rava, Erwin Vann, Aldo Romano, Richard Galliano, Robert Bonisolo, Paolo Fresu, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Chuck Israels, Matt Renzi. As a sideman he has contributed to the recording of over 50 albums by some of the most important jazzmen working in Italy; in particular the artistic relationship with saxophonists Pietro Tonolo, Emanuele Cisi, Claudio Fasoli and the american trumpet player (living in Italy) J Kyle Gregory has been more continuative, as documented in a series of works published by independent labels, including Egea, Splasc(h), Soulnote and Velut Luna. He is a regular member of the Lydian Sound Orchestra directed by Riccardo Brazzale, one of the most critically acclaimed Italian bands in the recent years. As a leader or co-leader he has released several albums in solo, duo and trio: his last releases include “Sbàndio” (Almar Records), a solo piano performance based on the cultural traditions of his native region in Italy, and “Passion Flower” (Philology) an homage to the music of Billy Strayhorn recorded together with the saxophonist Lee Konitz and “Radiotrio” (Almar Records) with Federico Malaman (el. bass) and Mauro Beggio (drums).

As an educator he has taught Jazz piano, improvisation and ensemble at the ”Civici Corsi di Jazz” (Milan), International Jazz Master Classes at Siena, Jazz Department of the Bologna Conservatory, “Il Suono Improvviso” (Venice), Perugia Classico, Summer stages at Loano, and the Jazzinty Workshop in Novomesto (Slovenia). He is currently Head of the Jazz Department at the Conservatory of Vicenza.

Aldo Zunino
Born in 1963 in Genoa, Italy, Aldo started to play double bass at age 17, having played the piano and guitar for six years. He quickly became very in-demand and started to work all over Italy, as well as in France, Germany, England, Spain, Switzerland, Croatia and Slovenia. He has peformed all over the world with many great musicians including: Franco D'Andrea, Enrico Rava, Pietro Tonolo, Paolo Fresu, Benny Golson, Art Farmer, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Chambers, Gary Bartz, Sweets Edison, Clark Terry, Ben Riley, Kenny Burrell, Lester Bowie, Junior Mance, Cedar Walton, Nat Adderley, Clifford Jordan, Horace Parlan and many others. Zunino has been Steve Grossman's bassist since 1995. He now lives in Genoa, where he has been teaching for the last twelve years.

Alfred Kramer
Born 1965 in Switzerland, he started playing drums at the age of sixteen after having studied piano for nine years. He started performing with his brother Lukas (pianist) and sister Hilaria (trumpet player). Since 1986, after moving to Italy, he has been working with musicians like Mal Waldron, Enrico Rava, Pietro Tonolo, Enrico Pieranunzi, Andy McGhee, Paul McCandless, Benny Bailey , Chet Baker (italian tour), Joe Henderson, Steve Lacy, Furio Di Castri, Barre Phillips, Art Lande, Art Farmer, Miroslav Vitous and Louis Stewart.

He performed in U.S.A., Finland, Sweden, Poland, France, Germany, Spain, Holland, Austria and on all major italian festivals (like Umbria Jazz, Rome, Clusone, etc) and made a bunch of worth-mentioning records with musicians like Phil Woods, Joe Lovano, Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz (4 albums) and Slide Hampton. He now lives in Certaldo.

He is also an arranger/conductor and has made four appearances on record playing trombone.
