Am 24. Mai veröffentlichen The Waterboys nach den gefeierten Vorgängern „Modern Blues“ und dem UK-Top 10 Album „Out Of All This Blue“ ihr neues Album “Where The Action Is“.

Der Titel ist beeinflusst vom Refrain von Robert Parkers 1960er Mod/Northern Soul Klassiker „Let's Go Baby“, „Where The Action Is“ ist ein 10-Song, genreübergreifendes Album, das einmal mehr die unterschiedlichen Talente des Bandgründers und Frontmannes Mike Scott zeigt. Einer der besten britischen Songwriter der letzten vier Jahrzehnte, dessen Songs von Künstlern wie Prince (der zwei verschiedene Arrangements von Scotts Klassiker „The Whole Of The Moon“ anfertigte), Rod Stewart, Tom Jones, Steve Earle und Ellie Goulding, die 2013 mit „How Long Will I Love You“ einen Top 3- Hit feierte, gecovert und/oder aufgenommen wurden.

Das Update des Titeltracks zum Parker-Klassiker - mit Texten, die Mikes eigene Anliegen widerspiegeln - ist ein Zyklon eines Songs aus Hammond-Orgel, Lead-Gitarrensoli von Steve Wickham, die durch seine durch eine Fuzzbox verstärkte Geige gespielt wurden und von weiblichen Vocals der fabelhaften Jess und Zeenie aus der Band ergänzt werden.

Die erste Single des Albums, "Right Side Of Heartbreak (Wrong Side Of Love)", wurde von Mike zu Hause aufgenommen, mit Gitarre und Gesang in ein Mikrofon und dann an Keyboarder Brother Paul geschickt, der in seinem Studio in Nashville die Soundlandschaften, Beats und Effekte hinzufügte. Eine dezente, aber ansteckende, gefühlvolle Nummer und sicher einer der herausragenden Momente des Albums.

Weitere Experimente gibt es auf „And There's Love“ (eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem brillanten englischen Produzenten Simon Dine) und das beatlastige „Take Me There I Will Follow You“.

„Where The Action Is“ enthält auch einen Song namens „Out Of All This Blue“, der Titel des letzten Albums. Aufgenommen für die dazugehörige Platte, beendete Mike den Song damals nicht und arbeitete letztes Jahr mit einigen Stiländerungen nochmal daran. Geschrieben für einen Freund, der an einem dunklen Ort war, ist das Ergebnis ein mitfühlendes Lied über die Suche nach Bestätigung.

Das Herzstück des Albums ist „In My Time On Earth“, leidenschaftlich, roh und poetisch, in dem Mike einen abgeklärten Blick auf die heutige Kulturlandschaft wirft. Der Refrain erzählt das Geheimnis des Herzens, ein göttliches Mysterium, das sich in aller Öffentlichkeit verbirgt.

Die beiden Schlusslieder sind von überragenden literarischen Figuren inspiriert. „Then She Made The Lasses-O“ basiert auf Robert Burns Gedicht „Green Grow The Rashes-O“ und der letzte Track des Albums ist „Piper At The Gates Of Dawn“.

The Waterboys

The Waterboys
are a band formed in 1983 by Mike Scott. The band's membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland, Ireland and England. Edinburgh, London, Dublin, Spiddal, New York, and Findhorn have all served as homes for the group. The band has played in a number of different styles, but their music is a mix of Celtic folk music with rock and roll. After ten years of recording and touring, they dissolved in 1993 and Scott pursued a solo career. They reformed in 2000, and continue to release albums and tour worldwide. Scott emphasises a continuity between The Waterboys and his solo work, saying that "To me there's no difference between Mike Scott and the Waterboys; they both mean the same thing. They mean myself and whoever are my current travelling musical companions."

The early Waterboys sound was dubbed "The Big Music" after a song on their second album, A Pagan Place. This musical style was described by Scott as "a metaphor for seeing God's signature in the world." It either influenced or was used to describe a number of other bands, including Simple Minds, The Alarm, In Tua Nua, Big Country, the Hothouse Flowers and World Party, the last of which was made up of former Waterboys members. In the late 1980s the band became significantly more folk influenced. The Waterboys eventually returned to rock and roll, and have released both rock and folk albums since reforming. Their songs, largely written by Scott, often contain literary references and are frequently concerned with spirituality. Both the group and its members' solo careers have received much praise from both rock and folk music critics, but The Waterboys as a band has never received the commercial success that some of its members have had independently. Aside from World Party, The Waterboys have also influenced musicians such as Eddie Vedder, Johnny Goudie, Colin Meloy of The Decemberists,Grant Nicholas of Feeder,James Marshall Owen, and Miles Hunt of The Wonder Stuff; both Bono and The Edge from U2 are fans of the band.
