Info zu Stelle lucenti

The music in this programme, featuring two vocal top soloists, Claron McFadden and Nora Fischer, reigns from the turn of the 16th to the 17th century, the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque era, a musically interesting and exciting time! Claudio Monteverdi is without any doubt the biggest Stella Lucente (shining star) of this album. He has always been considered the great master of this period and the title of the album could have been Monteverdi and his time. The highest goal is to touch the listeners soul. This leads, among other things, to an enormous amount of publications with compositions for solo voice, two sopranos and basso continuo and, subsequently, the birth of the opera. Many musicians work in the courts of the great city-states (such as Ferrara, Florence, Mantua, Venice) and the papal residence in Rome. The Duke of Ferrara employs three sopranos under the name Concerto delle Donne. They are the pride of the court and perform in special concerts attended only by high-ranking courtiers and important guests. Composers are inspired by them, Luzzaschi in particular, who worked as the musical director at the same court. Not only were they highly skilled singers, they were also adept at playing various instruments, some of which you can hear on this album; the harp, viola da gamba and guitar.

Claron McFadden, soprano
Nora Fischer, soprano
La Sfera Armoniosa

Claron McFadden
The American soprano Claron McFadden studied voice at the Eastman School of music, and received her bachelor’s degree with distinction in 1984. In the same year she moved to the Netherlands, where she currently resides, and has proven herself to be one of the most versatile singers of her generation.

Claron McFadden made her opera debut in the Holland Festival’s 1985 production of Hasse’s “L’Eroe Cinese”, conducted by Ton Koopman and in the following year, made her debut with William Christie in Rameau’s “Anacréon”, with the Opéra Lyrique du Rhin. She was invited many times to work with Christie, touring extensively in the US, South America, and Europe, including the Soviet Union. She made her debut at the Festival D’Aix en Provence with Christie in a controversial production of Rameau’s “Les Indes Galantes”, returning the following year in a Pierluigi Pizzi production of Rameau’s “Castor et Pollux”. Her Covent Garden debut, also under William Christie, was the Graham Vick production of Purcell’s “King Arthur”.

Claron McFadden won the second prize for opera at the International Competition in S’Hertogenbosch, and shortly thereafter was invited by the Netherlands Opera to sing Zerbinetta, in Graham Vick’s “Ariadne auf Naxos”. She has since been a regular guest there, most notably as Soeur Constance in Robert Carsen’s production of Poulenc’s “Dialogue des Carmélites, conducted by Yves Abel, and in Michel van der Aa’s “Afterlife”.

She was invited by Fabio Biondi to sing the title role in Cavalli’s “La Didone” at La Fenice in Venice, and was invited several times to sing at the Glyndebourne Festival, making her debut there in the title role of Graham Vick’s “Lulu”, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, and creating the role of the Controller in Jonathan Dove’s opera “Flight”, directed by Richard Jones. David McVickar has invited her on several occasions to take part in his productions, including “Don Giovanni” and “Semele”, conducted by Marc Minkowski. She has also collaborated on several dance productions, most notably Alain Platel’s “Vsprs”. In addition to her numerous opera roles, Claron McFadden has also made a name for herself on the concert stage, and has frequently sung at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She is frequently asked to sing the soprano part in Orff’s “Carmina Burana”, (most notably with Neeme Järvi and Klaus Peter Flor), “L’Enfant et les Sortilèges”, “Der Schauspieldirektor (Salzburger Festspiele), Bernstein’s “Candide”, and the “Bachianas Brasilieras number 5”. She peforms regularly with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Residentie Orchestra, as well as the MDR and SWR orchestras.

Claron McFadden is a regular guest at the BBC Proms, including opening the 1999 Proms in Tippett’s “The Mask of Time”, conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, and performing Schönberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire” with the Nash Ensemble. She performs regularly with the Ardittti Quartet, performing such pieces as Brian Ferneyhough’s Fouth String Quartet and the world premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s “Akt und Tag”. Together with the Nash Ensemble and the Arditti Quartet she recorded Harrison Birtwistle’s “Pulse Shadows”, conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw, which won a Grammaphone Award, and, again with the Nash Ensemble, she recorded his “The Woman and the Hare”, which was nominated for a Grammy.

Claron McFadden is equally at home with Oratorio, working with such conductors as Jos van Immerseel (Johannes Passion, Buxtehude Cantatas), and Frans Brüggen (c mol messe, Exsultate Jubilate). Because of her versatility, Claron McFadden has found herself often asked to perform with jazz musicians, such as the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Michiel Borstlap Chris Hinze, and Aka Moon.

Nora Fischer
is challenging the way we listen to the voice. The Amsterdam-based singer is renowned for her adventurous approach to live performance and her creative projects fusing classical and contemporary repertoire. This can range from traditional concert programmes to genre-defying collaborations – such as her debut album HUSH, which was released on Deutsche Grammophon in 2018, and her work with Yo-Yo Ma's world-renowned Silkroad.

Using her voice as a versatile instrument, Fischer's repertoire ranges from Monteverdi to the many compositions that have been written for her in the present day. Her “affinity with experimental classical styles and sharp dramatic instincts” (New York Times) have led to many collaborations with leading contemporary composers, including Osvaldo Golijov, David Lang & Louis Andriessen. During the 2017/18 season, Nora signed with Universal Music and was nominated by the Concertgebouw to perform in major concert halls across Europe for the ECHO Rising Stars Tour.

Fischer’s unique approach has taken her around the globe, from the Philharmonie de Paris and Walt Disney Concert Hall to the Lowlands Pop Festival or a mysterious forest at the Oerol Theatre Festival. She has premiered many new operas, most recently working with the Dutch National Opera and Pierre Audi for the world premiere of Andriessen’s Theatre of the World. In February 2020, under the direction of Simon McBurney, Nora joined the LA Philharmonic to perform in Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins. Other contemporary collaborations include performances with the Kronos Quartet, Asko|Schönberg Ensemble and l’Arpeggiata.

In recent and upcoming seasons, Nora has projects at venues/festivals including the Lincoln Center (Mostly Mozart Festival), Barbican, La Jolla Chamber Music Festival and Lunalia, and has been invited on three tours with the Silk Road Ensemble, including her Australasian debut. In April 2019, Nora premiered a new Andriessen commission with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which she took to the BBC Proms and Musikfest Berlin with BBC Symphony Orchestra in September 2019, and to the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in November 2019.

Born into a family with a rich musical tradition, Fischer trained at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen and holds a Masters in New Audiences and Innovative Practice from the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague.

La Sfera Armoniosa
makes early music sound as if it’s just been composed. It takes the time to fathom the beauty of sound and emotion contained in the music. La Sfera does not only perform music by well-known composers, but plays unknown works, which after extensive research, have been distilled from early printed works and manuscripts.

La Sfera Armoniosa’s main focus is with Historically Informed Performance Practice. We dedicate ourselves to the conservation of historically acurate instruments and playing techniques.
