Info for Diary of a Fly

The avant-garde composer Béla Bartók was fascinated by two things: nature and traditional music. Even in his youth, he was enthralled by the raw directness of Hungarian folk music. He was constantly inspired by the impressions he gathered on his musical research trips.

Around two years after her debut, Judith Goldbach's journey continues: the award-winning double bassist released her second album, ‘Diary of a Fly’, in autumn 2017. Here, she builds a bridge between the unique style of the Hungarian composer and music ethnologist and jazz. While she explored the roots of his musical work on her debut album ‘Reisetagebuch’ (Travel Diary), she has now realised her long-cherished dream of recording Bartók's music in her own arrangements.

The new album ‘Diary of a Fly’, in which she refers to Bartók's well-known work ‘From the Diary of a Fly’, sounds modern, fresh and inspired. The imaginary fly that once inspired Bartók guides the listener through the musical diary. It tells stories from the Balkans, of dangers, encounters, experiences, travels, feelings... Do flies even have feelings? – In any case, there are no limits to the listener's imagination!

Free improvisations, experimental sounds and exciting rhythms with driving and multi-layered grooves contrast with Béla Bartók's archaic melodies.

The Judith Goldbach Quartet was founded in 2009. Inspired by the music of Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, the band, led by jazz bassist Judith Goldbach, creates its own unique musical soundscape. The captivating simplicity and sometimes raw directness of Hungarian folk music, whose emotional depth already moved Bartók, is captured and perfectly showcased in Goldbach's own compositions and arrangements. Energetic improvisations by the entire quartet contrast with duo pieces of minimalist fragility. In this way, Bartók's expressionistic timbre meets sophisticated modern jazz.
