Info for Native Son (Original Motion Picture Score)

Native Son is an American drama film, directed by Rashid Johnson, based upon the famous novel of the same name by Richard Wright. Adapted for the 21st Century, the film tells the story of 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, an African American youth living in utter poverty in a poor area on Chicago's South Side. The score to Native Son was composed by the duo Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, best known for their score to Stranger Things and as members of the electronic band S U R V I V E. With their score to Native Son, Dixon and Stein have again produced a masterclass of electronic music that shifts between eerie dread and encroaching doom to the relentless beats of pursuit and evasion.

Directed by artist Rashid Johnson, Native Son is a contemporary adaptation of Richard Wright‘s 1940 classic novel.

A young African-American named Bigger Thomas(Ashton Sanders) living in Chicago enters into a seductive new world of money and power after he is hired as a chauffeur for an affluent businessman. The film is a subtle, provocative and original look at race relations in the USA.

Rashid Johnson partnered with composing duo Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein (Stranger Things) to craft the score to Native Son. The result is a dark atmosphere where distorted guitars are mixed with subtle ambient and electronic compositions. This is Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein’s first score for a feature film.
