Info for Gypsy Baroque

The word "gypsy" carries the full weight of a history filled with ostracism and deadly hate. However, the word "gypsy music" has always been a promise of happiness. And it still is: it sounds so wild and spicy, it sounds like blazing minstrelsy, melodic blessedness and a rousing passion for dancing. In their search for 18th century "gypsy music" the musicians around Vittorio Ghielmi found not only rare manuscripts but also pieces by master composers, which were inspired by travelling musicians. Their program thus becomes an homage to all the nameless virtuosos of that period. And when Stano Palúch and Marcel Comendant virtuosically unleash violin and cymbal Sanssouci happily swings in gypsy sound.

Il Suonar Parlante
Vittorio Ghielmi, viola da gamba, direction

Il Suonar Parlante Orchestra
“Il Suonar Parlante”: this expression, invented by Nicolò Paganini, refers to a special sound emission technique by which musical instruments can really imitate the human voice. This technique has survived in certain marginal European and extra-European areas and is essential for a new interpretation of our ancient musical patrimony.

Vittorio Ghielmi‘s initiative, the ensemble Il Suonar Parlante, has successfully aimed at and reached the collaboration between musicians in view to bring back to life this image of sound by means of artistic productions, seminars, congresses and collection of documents. The viols consort is Il Suonar Parlante’s core group, and is based on the collaboration of four gamba soloists: Vittorio Ghielmi, Rodney Prada, Fahmi Alqhai and Cristiano Contadin. In 2007 Il Suonar Parlante was orchestra in residence for the 46th Semana de Musica Religiosa de Cuenca, Madrid, where in an enlarged setting (35 musicians) and accompanied by the Swedish choir Rilke Ensemblen (G.Eriksson), it was the protagonist of the world premiere of a big spectacle based on Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri, conceived and conducted by Ghielmi and with the collaboration of American film maker Marc Reshovsky.

Since then the orchestra, in different settings, has been regularly invited in the most important concert halls all over the world (Berliner Philarmonie, Salzburg Festspiele, Auditorium Nacional Madrid…). It has “orchestra in residence” in Stuttgart Festspiele 2010, in Segovia music festival 2011, in Bozar music festival Brussels.

The CD “Barbarian Beauty” (“Barbarische Schönheit”), dedicated to the concerto for viola da gamba and orchestra (J.G.Graun, Telemann, Tartini), with the Moldavian cymbalon virtuoso Marcel Comendant has appeared for “Passacaille” winning many critic prizes. The CD “The Passion of Musick”, with Dorothee Oberlinger, appeared for Sony Deutsche Harmonia Mundi, winning the Echo Klassik Preis 2015. The new “Gyspys Baroque” album with Stano Palúch (violin) is in preparation.
