Rechtzeitig vor seinem 85. Geburtstag am 29. April 2018 beglückt Country-Legende Willie Nelson seine Fans mit einem neunen Album: "Last Man Standing". Das Album besteht ausschließlich aus neuen Willie Nelson-Kompositionen, die in Zusammenarbeit mit seinem langjährigen musikalischen Partner und Produzenten Buddy Cannon entstanden.

"Last Man Standing" ist ein würdiger Nachfolger zum letztjährigen Longplayer „God’s Problem Child“, das sieben Nelson/Cannon-Stücke enthielt und die US Country-Charts auf Platz eins enterte. Die beiden arbeiten bereits seit 2008 zusammen, in dieser Zeit produzierte Cannon mehr als ein Dutzend Willie Nelson-Alben.

Die Art und Weise, wie das Songwriting Duo an den gemeinsamen Stücken arbeitet, ist durchaus ungewöhnlich und beginnt damit, dass die beiden sich per Kurznachrichten Songtexte mit Melodien hin- und herschicken. Diese unorthodoxe Arbeitsweise brachte letzten Endes zwölf neue Kompositionen hervor, die sich nun auf „Last Man Standing“ finden. „Willie ist ein Jazzsänger und Jazzmusiker“, erklärt Cannon. „Er ist ein Improvisations-Musiker. Es ist jedes Mal anders. Man nimmt einen guten Take auf und weiter geht’s.”

"Last Man Standing" ist eines der persönlichsten Alben in Nelsons Karriere und offenbart eine große emotionale Bandbreite an Themen, die ihn beschäftigen, von tief nachdenklichen Songs wie „Something You Get Through“ bis hin zu verspielten, fröhlichen Liedern wie „Me And You“ und „Ready To Roar“.
